Patented Dec. 19, 1933 UNITED STATES LABEL HOLDER AND THE METHOD or SAME 7 Henry L. Batek, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Wilson- Jones Company, Chicago, 111., a corporation of Massachusetts Application March 26,
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a label holder for books and concerns itself primarily with a method of forming the label holder in the covering material of the book and in such a covering material having an integrally formed label holder.
The invention comprises the novel structure and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred form of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a book having a label holder involving this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken upon the line II-II of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken upon the line III-III of Figure 1.
According to this invention, the book covering material which may consist of leather, imitation leather, fabric or canvas or any similar substance that may be used for book bindings is stiffened embosseed outwardly, and after this embossing process has been completed, a window is cut in the embossed portion leaving, however, an offset portion for receiving the label thereunder. The covering material is then slit at one end of the embossed portion for the insertion of the label. In the event that material is used which is likely to unravel, such embossed portion may be sprayed with nitrocellulose or some similar agent for preventing the unraveling of the edges of the window. A protective strip of suitable material is then pasted over the interior of the covering material to cover the window of the label holder in order that, when the covering material is applied to the book cover, and glued thereto, it will be impossible for the glue to pass through the window or the label holder or glue the edges thereof to the cover in such a way that the label cannot be inserted.
Referring now to the drawing, it will be noted that the label holder has been made'in the rear structure of the book, that is, in the binding on the back portion of the book. It will, however, be understood that this label holder may be made upon the sides of the book or in any suitable place in the binding. The book illustrated in the drawing to which this inven- 1931. Serial No. 525,430
tion is applied has a rear back plate '2 which forms a portion of the rear structure 1 of the book. A piece of kraft paper or other suitable fibrous material 4 is pasted to the book covering material '7 in order to stiffen the same for embossing or pressing outwardly the label holder. After the covering, material is embossed, however, a window is cut in the embossed portion, leaving outwardly offset flanges or portions 6 upon the fibrous material 4 and the book covering material 7 around the border as is clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3, in order to provide a space or guideway for receiving the label. Before the covering material 7 is attached to the cover with the label holder properly formed therein, a protective piece of paper or any other suitable material 3 is pasted over the interior of v the fibrous member 4 for closing the window of the label holder before the covering material is attached or glued to the cover of the book in order to prevent the glue from oozing through the label holder or gluing the same to the covering material 7 so that the label cannot be inserted therein. vThe covering material 7 and stiffening member 4 are slotted at one end of the label holder as indicated at 9 for allowing a label 10 to be inserted into the label holder.
From the foregoing, it will be evident that a novel method has been designed for forming a label holder integrally in the binding of the ,book irrespective of whether such binding is leather or imitation leather or canvas or fabric or any other suitable binding. It will be further appreciated that according to the method employed, the label holder may be placed at any convenient location in the binding material which may be either at the back or the sides of the book. According to this invention, no separate label holder is required to be incorporated into the book; the label holder being formed in the covering material and when the same is applied to the book it will be ready to receive the label.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than is necessitated by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a loose leaf binder, a flexible covering material covering the exterior of the binder, a stiffening member secured to said covering material, said covering material and stiffening 3. A book structure including a covering me;--
terial having a stifiening member, said covering material and stiffening member being pressed outwardly at a predetermined location to provide a label holder, said outwardly pressed portion having a window, said covering material and stiffening memberforming an offset flange surrounding said window for receiving a label thereunder, said covering material having a slot adjacent said outwardly pressed portion for re ceiving a label.
