theless durable structure is obtained and whereby a great'deal of time and expense are saved in the manufacture thereof.
The invention comprises the novel structure and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims thereof. t
In the accompanying drawings,'which illustrate certain preferred forms of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar'features in the different views:
Figure 1 is an interior fragmentary, broken and enlarged plan view of a binder involving this invention.
Figure 2 is a reduced and broken perspective view of an anchoring member embodying a part of this invention.
Figure 3 is an enlarged and broken interior plan view of the binder in one stage of 0 the manufacture thereof.
Figure A; is a reduced transverse sectional View illustrating a further step in the manufacture thereof.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4:,illuscrating the final step in the manufacture thereof. V
Figure 6 1s an enlarged fragmentary 1nterior broken plan view of a modified form.
of binder involving this invention.
Figure 7 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken upon the line VIIVII of Figure 6 but showing the fiangesat one end of the channel before they are bent down.
Figure 8 is an enlarged sectional view 5 taken upon the line VIII-VIII of Figure 7 and showing a book in the binder.
Figure 9 is an enlarged sectional view taken upon the line IXIX of Figure 7 According to this invention, a pair of cover members are connected and covered with an 1930. ser'aa 1e. 461,929.
outer covering of leather or the like, a channel-shaped metal member is then superposed over the lnter or medial portlon of the two connected covers. The edges of the covering are then folded over the end edges of the cover members and inserted in slots'in the ends of the flanges of the metal channel mem her or interengaged therewith. Suitable fabric strips of lining are then pasted over the lower portions of the cover members and over the flanges of the metal channel and the web thereof to anchor the same to the cover members. The rod-holding plate is then inserted between the flanges ofthe'channel member and the former are folded down over such plate to firmly anchor the same.
Describing the invention more particularly with reference to the drawings and referring first to Figures 1 to 5, it will be noted that the two covermembers consist of fiber boards 1 which are covered and connected by an outer leathercovering' 2 which is folded over the outer edges of the boards ina manner to be later set'forth'. A strip of paper board 3 or the like is'preferably placed between the inner edges of the fiber boards along the central portion of the binder, which'forms the back thereof. A
channel-shaped member 4 having slots 5 cut in itsend's adjacent the web thereof is superposed upon the paper board 3. The ends of the binder cover as a 'whole. The interior surfaces of the cover members are provided with a proper lining 2a as is usual in the art.- l
A plate 8 having terminal flanges 9 with keyhole slots 10 is then placed within the channel 4 and the flanges 4a are bent or folded inwardly over said plate 8, as shown in Figure 5, whereby said plate becomes firmly anchored to the cover. A rod 11 is adapted to be inserted in the keyhole slots 10 for retaining a pamphlet or book or the like.
In the modified form shown in Figures 6 to 9, the fiber boards 12 are also covered and connected by a leather covering 13 or the like, and a paper board 14 or the like is placed between the fiber boards over the medial portion of the cover that serves as a back portion for the binder. A channel member 15 is superposed upon the paper board 14 and fabric strips of lining 16 are glued respectively to the two fabric boards and over the flanges 15a of the channel and to the web of the channel. A plate 17 having terminal flanges 18 with apertures 19 is placed within the channel, and the end portions of the flanges 15a are severed from the central portion and are bent over the plate 17, as shown in Figure 9. for firmly anchoring such plate in the binder. It will be noted that one bent-over flange 15a overlaps the other and produces a very rigid construction.
A flexible wire rod 20 is adapted to be inserted in the apertures of the plate 17 One end of the wire rod may be curled or bent over the terminal flange, as indicated at 21 in Figure 6, to retain the rod in place. The other end of the rod 20 may be removed from its aperture by simply flexing the rod, so that a book or pamphlet 22, as shown in Figure 8, may be inserted or removed.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that a novel method and article has been disclosed which constitutes a material advance in the art, especially from a manufacturing standpoint. In addition, the article produced is of exceedingly strong and durable construction, yet not bulky nor clumsy.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention. and I, therefore, do not desire to be limited in the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. The herein described method of making a binder which consists in applying a covering and connecting sheet to a pair of fiber boards in spaced relation, placing a channel member between said boards, attaching said channel member to said fiber boards, inserting a rod-holding plate in said channel and folding the flanges of said channel over said plate.
2. The herein described method of making a binder which consists in attaching a flexible cover to a pair of fiber boards in spaced relation, positioning a channel between said fiber boards, interlocking the ends of said cover with the flanges of said channel. gluing fabric strips over the flanges of said channel and attaching the same to said fiber boards, in-
serting a pamphlet-holding plate in said channel and folding the flanges of said channel over said plate.
3. The herein described method of making a binder consisting of forming a cover, superposing a metal channel along the center line of said cover, attaching said metal channel to said cover, inserting a pamphlet-holding plate in said channel and folding the flanges of said channel over said plate.
4:. The herein described method of making a binder consisting of forming cover members with an outer flexible covering, superposing a metal channel upon the medial portion of said covering, engaging the ends of said covering to said channel member, gluing fabric strips over said channel and the adjacent parts of said cover members, inserting a pamphlet-holding plate in said channel and flexing parts of said channel over said plate.
5. In a binder, a covering. a metal member, fabric strips covering said metal member and attaching the same to said covering, said metal member having terminal slits into which a portion of said covering extends, and a pamphlet-holding plate superposed upon said metal member, said metal member having parts overlapping said plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Penn.
