Description
July 5, 1932. R. E. CARNEY BINDER AND mmcume DEVICE THEREFOR Filed March 19. 1930 Patented July 5, 1932 UNITED s'm'rrzs PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to loose leaf binders and more particularly toan indexing means to be utilized in connection therewith.
The main object of my invention is to provide a loose leaf binder with a simple and inexpensive index card receiving means of such a construction as will not necessitate any material change in the form of construction of loose leaf binders of present type.
Another object 'of the invention is to provide a means for receiving index cards and which will enable the user to interchange the index cards at will, as may be necessary or desirable from time to time.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter pointed out in the following detailed description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in
which indexing means;
Figure 2 illustratesthe cardholder utilized in the construction shown in Flgure 1, showh t ring an index card about to be inserted into said holder;
Figure 3 is an inside view of the binder cover shown in Figure 1, in open position, partly broken away to better illustrate the 0 construction thereof; and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the cover taken along the line 44 of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Although I have confined the disclosure in COVQI 13 as at 36. the drawings to one particular form of loose leaf binder to illustrate, by way of example, the application of my new and novel indexing device, it is evident that I may eas ly apply the indexing means comprlsing my 1n- Vention to almost any form, of book, note book or loose leaf binder that may be obtainable, or to any other device wherefor indexing means may be utilized.
The preferred form of index card holder of my invention is best shown, per se, in Figure 2 and comprises a container or holder 34 composed of any transparent material preferably flexible, such as celluloid, and

which is made from a flat sheet which known manner.
is folded at 35 and stitched as at 36' to form the pocket 37 into which the index card 27 The holder 34 may be fastened into the t, loose leaf binder in any preferred manner, and in the position shown in Figure 3 it is exposed to view by means of a suitable opening 38 in the outer cover 13. The holder is'preferably constructed of celluloid which can be easily manipulated into a holder of 6 the type described, and when in use, such a holder will readily conform with the curved back of a binder as well as adjust itself to any irregularities, because of its inherent flexibility. Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, the holder 34 is shown as being convenientlyinterposed between the outer cover 13 of the binder, and the cardboard cover members 14 and metal plate or adapter 15. If the holder is to be stitched before hand, as showntin Figure 2, it may readily be glued to the outer cover and the balance of the binder may be assembled in the usual manner v In this case, the turned-over edge 39 of the outer cover will necessarily have to be slotted to permit access to the holder. for inserting an index card. However, I prefer to fasten the holder and-asse'mble the binder in the following manner: a Before folding and stitching the holder, one edge 41 thereof may be glued to the outer cover 13 and'also stitched thereto as at 49. The holder is then folded at 35 and the two halves thereof stitched together and 'to the The cardboard cover members 14 are then glued in proper position to overlap the edges of the holder. The remainder of the binder is assembled in the usual manner the adapter 15 being ,gluedto 1 the cover 13 and to' the holder 34, and the 99 lining 21" being glued in position. The edge 39 of the cover 13 is then folded over and glued, this' edge of the cover having been previously, cut out'as at 43 to exposethe opening'orfpocket 37 of the holder for the insertionof an index card.' vThe inner linings 23 are then glued inplace, and a .com-' mon type of paperholding unit 18 is then suitably secured to'the adapter 15 in a well It is to be noted that the only change which is necessary, in constructing a loose leaf binder of this type, is to provide the outer cover 13 with the cutout 43, and to also provide the cover with the opening 38, which may easily be accomplished by the use of a proper die. No additional materials or parts need to be utilized in the construction of the cover or loose leaf binder for the incorporation therein of the card holder 34.
Although the above description relates to a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is possible to vary the construction thereof without departing from the field and scope of the invention, and therefore, I do not wish to be strictly limited to the specific form of construction disclosed in the drawing, except in so far as the appended claims are so limited.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a book cover, a unitary transparent holder for the reception of an index card, said book cover having an opening, and said holder being fastened within said book cover and disposed adjacent said cover opening for exposing said index card.
2. In combination with an apertured book cover, an index card holder comprising a fiat transparent member folded substantially intermediate its ends, and stitched at right angles to said fold, said stitching forming card guiding means, said holder eing fas tened within said book cover, and disposed adjacent said cover aperture to expose said index card to view.
3. In combination with a loose leaf binder comprising an outer cover, and backing members, a unitary transparent card holder for the reception of an index card, said holder being interposed between said backing members and said outer cover, and connected with the latter, and said outer cover of the binder having an opening therein to expose said index card. 7
"4. In combination with a loose leaf binder comprising an outer cover member, stiffening pieces, and an adapter member for receiving paper holding units, a folded card holder interposed between said outer cover member and said adapter member, and connected with one of said members, and said outer cover member having an opening therein to expose said folded card holder.
5. In combination with a loose leaf binder comprising an outer cover member, inner cover members, and an adapter member for receiving paper holding units, a transparent card holder having an opening adapted for receiving an index card, said holder being disposed between said outer and inner cover members with its opening adjacent one edge of said binder, and said outer cover member having an opening therein for exposing said card holder.
6. In combination with a loose leaf binder comprising an outer cover member, stifiening pieces, and an adapter member for receiving paper-holding units, an index card holder comprising a fiat transparent member folded substantially intermediate its ends and stitched at right-angles to said fold, said stitching forming card-guiding means, said card holder being interposed between said outer cover member and said adapter member, and connected with one of said members, and said outer cover member having an opening'therein to expose said card holder.
7 In combination with an apertured book cover, index card holding means comprising a. folded member, binding means extending at right-angles to the fold of said member for fastening the folded portions thereof together, said binding means forming a guide for an index card, and said card holding means being fastened within said cover and disposed adjacent the cover aperture to be viewed therethrough.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my namethis 17th day of March, 1930.
ROSE E. CARNEY.
