Be it known that I, JOHN Louis BURGoYNE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the cit f and county of San Francisco, State of alifornia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Index-Tabs, of which the following is a specification..

My invention has for its object an index tab specially adapted for use in loose leaf books, ledgers and the like and in vertical filing and card index systems. One of the objects of my invention consists in providing an index tab having a transparent front and back member, preferably formed of a piece of celluloid folded over at the top edge and on each of the inner side surfaces l cement to the celluloid a piece of cloth, paper or the like having a thickness corresponding approximately to the thickness of the inserts which are adapted to be used within the tab. When the insert is inserted its lower edge rests upon the ledge formed by this strip of cloth or paper and thus the insert is positioned and its face remains visible through the transparent celluloid.

On the inner surface or surfaces of the said cloth strip I gum a piece of )aper or cloth which preferably extends a ove the aforesaid ledge thus providing a backing for the insert.

The backing member strip or sheet I preferably extend downward approximately to the lower line of the celluloid and not as far as the lower edge of the ledge member. The remaining exposed surfaces of both members I provide with gum or cement for attachment to the card, guide, leaf or folder or the like.

When the tab is in use and properly attached to a card or leaf, there will be an open space between the celluloid inner face of the tab and the backing sheet and the bottom limit of this space will be the top edge of the ledge member strip which thus forms a limiting ledge or footing on which the in.- sert or legend strip is adapted toA rest and aline itself with the tab.

I prefer to make this tab by folding the celluloid over at the top and having affixed a cloth or paper strip on the inner surface of each of the transparent faces and aflixinganother strip of flexible material on a portion of the inner face of each of the ledge strips and this backing strip I prefer to fold at its center so that it is concentric with and inside of the folded celluloid, and the fold in the backing strip is separated from- Specication of Letters Patent.

the fold of the celluloid a considerable distance. This is for the purpose of providing the card or leaf and gummed thereto, they insert is frictionally held in place alined against the ledge formed by the ledge strips which strips form a seat for the insert as well as a guide for the insert to slide on. The provision of this ledge or footing or slide by a layer of material between the backing and the celluloid is one of the objects 'of my invention.

My tab may be aflixed to the card or leaf at any height desired so that a portion or all of the insert, showing through the celluloid may be exposed above the edge of the cart. The inserts may be separated or they may be folded to straddle the backing member, in which case they will be observable from both sides through the two celluloid faces. If so desired a single piece of paper may be used for backing and a single insert employed therewith or tivo separate inserts, instead of one folded centrally may be employed.

I prefer to have the ledge strips extend below the Vcelluloid and also below the backing member or to have the backing member in some instances extend below the ledge member. Such variations to suit individual tastes or conditions will occur to one in practising my invention and I desire to be understood as claiming all such.

My tabs are very easily applied as they open up comparatively flat, see Fig. 9, thus exposing the inner gummed surface to be easily moistened for attaching to the card or leaf. The placing of the insert in position is most readily accomplished by having an unobstructed space between the fold of the backing member and the fold of the celluloid when they are so open, and this insert may be at any time moved into or out of position sliding on the ledge member. It will be noted that any size of my tab may be employed to extend above the card to varying degrees to suit the requirements of the operator, by mming the tab to different depths on t e card. My tab 1s also particularly adapted to be made in strips which may be cut off withI a palr of scissors to any length required, and when in position the ledge supports the inserts in place and makes a positive guide for 1t. At alltimes` when in use the insert, whether placed in position back of one or both faces of the transparent celluloid members, .is clearly observable and may be removed or changed from time to time without destroyin the usefulness of the tab. ther objects will appear from the specifications and drawings. v

By referring to the accompanying drawings my inventionwill be made clear.

Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 show m tab applied in different positions to a car guide, leaf or folder.

Figs. 4 and 5 and 6 are cross sections of Fi 1, 2, and 3 on the lines I-I, II-II, II -III, thereof.

Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a long tab having a multifaced insert therein.

Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11 are end views and show variations in the arrangement of the assembling of the transparent member, the ledge or strip member and the backing sheet member.

Fig. 12 shows an insert ready to be slipped into position between the transparent member and the backing as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 8 and 9.

Fig. 13` shows the form of insert sheets especially adapted for use in my tab.

Throughout the figures similar numerals refer to identical parts.

Referring particularly to Figs. 4 and 8, the transparent member is shown having a front face 1 and top fold at 2 and rear face at 3. At 4 and 5 are shown ledge members preferably formed of cloth or paper which are cemented at 6 and 7 to the transparent members 1 and 3, respectively. On the inner face of 4 and 5 are affixed the sides of the backing sheet 8 and 9 which latter -I prefer to fold along its upper edge as at 10. On both of the inner sides of the assembled tab I prepare gum or cement for afiixing to a card or leaf as 11. It will be noticed on account of the fold 10 being below the fold 2 that when the tab is spread apart as indicated in Fig. 9 the space between the transparent member and the backing strip will be opened up providing an insert space at 12. The insert 12 may now be readily and easily placed in position, its lower edges contacting on the ledge or slide surfaces 14 and 15 of the ledge members 4, 5. The gummed surfaces are now moistened and the tab is affixed to the card 11 in any desired position, extending considerably above the edge 17 as in Fig. 1, or an intermediate height as in Fig. 2, or with but a small surface exposed above the edge 17 as in Fig. 3. Whenused as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3 the tab may indicate the principal subject matter by the legend extending above the upper edge 17 of the said card and below the said edge may be written a secondary or subjective legend as indicated by the words Oak and Green finish respectively. It will be understood in employing my index tabs different colors of inserts or of Celluloid may be employed to further indicate classifications.

In Figs. 4 and 5 the position of the card 11 and the depth to which the tab is aiiixed is most clearly-shown and it will be seen that where the entire inner gummed surface is moistened and the tab pressed in place on the card or leaf that portion of the leaves of the backing sheetl above the edge 17 stick to gether and form at 18 aivreinforcing inner member serving practically as the continuation of the card 11Qand forming a reinforof ing support for the Celluloid material. It will also be seen thatthe dropping of the inner fold 10 below-the fold of the transparent material 2 when"the two sides of the tab are spread apart for the purpose of moistening the' inner jsurfaces19', 20, as shown in Fig. 9, makes an open pocket 12 into which the folde'dlinsert vof Fig. 12 may be very easily inserted. The assembledtab n is then brought togetherfwiththe .inner faces 19 and 20 against the cardand in the desired position. The space between the transparent vmember and the backing member closes up and holds the insert therebetweenwith its lower edge 21, 22, alined against the ledge edges 14, 15, of the clothstrips'4,`5, respectively. The inserts may be readily formed as indicated in Fig. 13 wherein dotted line 23, 24, may be perforated along which the tabs may be torn and they may be cut to any width desired, at right angles'to such perforations. The tabs are then folded along the lines 12-12 and are then ready for use.

Referring particularly to Figs. 8 to 11, it will be seen thatin Fig. '8 the ledge strips 4, 5, extend below the celluloid faces 1, 3, and also below the backing member 8, 9. In Fig. 9 the backing member extends the full depth of the ledge strip. In-Fig. 10 the transparent member, the ledge member and the backing member all terminate on the same line as at 25 and 26. In Fig. 11 :the transparent member and ledge member are made of the same depth while the backing member is made shorter. I prefer to make the ledge member of cloth which is best adapted to securely hold upon the ordinary card or ledger paper of commerce and in that case I also prefer to extend the said ledge member below the backing member. The cloth also is well adapted to hold the celluloid when the latter is cemented thereto under proper conditionspof temperature and pressure so that a tab formed with the three layers of material under proper factory conditions results in a tab of particularly durable and serviceable qualities.

I claim:

1. An index tab comprising a transparent member, a backing sheet and a strip therebetween, said strip having an upper edge forming a ledge on which an insert is adapted to slide when said insert is placed between said backing and said transparent member.

2. An index tab as set forth in claim 1 wherein said backing sheet is gummed on its back for attachment to a card or the like.

3. An index tab as set forth in claim 1 wherein said strip extends below *said transparent member and said backing sheet and is gummed on its back and wherein said backing sheet is also gummed on its back.

4. An index tab comprising a transparent member folded double to form two sides, a backing sheet folded to form two other sides and positioned between said first named sides, and spacing strips ailixed between adjacent sides of the transparent member and of the backing strip.

5.An index tab as set forth in claim 4 wherein the inner surfaces of the assembled parts so formed are gummed for attachment to a card or the like.

6. An index tab as set forth in claim 4 wherein each of said spacing strips has its upper edgev adapted to form a guide and rest for an insert and has its lower edge extending below the adjacent transparent member.

7. An index tab as set forth in claim 4 wherein each of said spacing strips has its upper edge adapted to form a guide surface and rest for an insert and has its lower edge extending below the adjacent transparent member and also below said adjacent backing sheet.

8. An index tab as set forth in claim 1 wherein said transparent member is of celluloid and said backing sheet is of paper and said strip is of cloth.

9. An index tab as set forth in claim 1 wherein said transparent member is of celluloid and said backing sheet is of paper and said strip is of cloth, wherein said backing sheet is gummed on its back for attachment to a card or the like.

10. An index tab as set forth in claim 1 wherein said transparent member is of celluloid and said backing sheet is of paper and said strip is of cloth, wherein said strip ex tends below said transparent member and said backing sheet and is gummed on its back and wherein said backing sheet is also gummed on its back.

11. An index tab as set forth in claim 4 wherein said transparent member is of celluloid and said backing sheet is of paper and said strip is of cloth.

12. An index tab as set forth in claim 4 wherein said transparent member is of celluloid and said backing sheet is of Paper and said strip is of cloth and wherein the inner surfaces so formed of the assembled parts nl'e gummed for attachment to a card or the 13. An index tab as set forth in claim 4 wherein said transparent member is of celluloid and said backing sheet is of paper and said strip is of cloth and wherein each of said spacing strips has its upper edge adapted to form a guide surface and rest for an insert and has its lower edge extending below the transparent material.

14. An index tab as set forth in claim 4 wherein said transparent member is of celluloid and said backing sheet is of paper and said strip is of cloth wherein each of said spacing strips has its upper edge adapted to form a guide surface and rest for an insert and has its lower edge extending below the transparent material and also below said backing strip.

15. In an index tab a folded sheet of transparent material and a folded backing member of flexible material, said backing member spaced away from said transparent member by strips of flexible material whereby a space is formed above the upper edges of the flexible strips and between the transparent and the backing members which space is adapted to hold an insert.

16. In an index tab a folded sheet of transparent material and a folded backing member of flexible material, said backing member spaced away from said transparent member by strips of flexible material whereby a. space is formed above the upper edges of the flexible strips and between the transparent and the backing members which space is adapted to hold an insert, and a folded insert within said space and straddling the said folded backing member.

17. In an index tab a folded piece of transparent material and within said folded transparent material a folded strip of flexible material and between the transparent sides and the sides of the flexible material strips of flexible material affixed to form each a ledge or rest adapted to hold an in sert above the top edge of last mentioned strips.

18. In an index tab a folded piece of transparent material and within said folded transparent material a fol-ded strip of flexible material and between the transparent sides and the sides of the flexible material strips of flexible material affixed to form each a ledge or rest adapted to hold an 1nsert above the top edge of last mentioned strips and a folded insert within said space and straddling the said folded backing member.
