Abstract
A paperback book or periodical is bound using a cover provided with permanent adhesive (5a, 5b) from which a strippable covering (6) has been removed. The adhesive may be applied in the form of double-sided adhesive tape. The adhesive (5b) in the spine region may be omitted so as to leave only the adhesive (5a), or vice versa. The cover may take the form of a false spine (Fig. 4). <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN BINDING
Although paperback books are relatively cheap, they are not particularly durable and do not have an attractive appearance on the bookshelf. The same may be said of most periodicals. Paperback books may be converted into hardback books by a bookbinder but not readily by the consumer. Various types of binder are available for receiving periodicals but do not result in a firm bound volume comparable with a hardback book.
The cover and binding system described herein overcome this problem.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross section through one embodiment of the cover, Figure 2 is a cross section through the cover showing a paperback book or periodical as bound binding, Figure 3 is a section through one modification, and Figure 4 a section through another modification.
Referring to Figure 1, the cover has a spine S and a pair of boards B formed from two sheets of card 1, two strips of card 2, a paper liner 3 and a covering 4 of standard covering material, for example cloth, leather or plastics. The liner and covering 3 and 4 are bonded to the sheets 1 and strips 2. Lines of permanent adhesive 5a and 5b, are applied to the liner 3 where it overlies the strips 2 and to the spine S of the cover. A strippable covering 6 is applied to each line of the adhesive.
The cover so formed is supplied to the user who removes the strippable covering, offers the spine of the paperback book or periodical to the spine S of the cover, and folds the sides of the cover over to cause the adhesive strips to contact and adhere to the book or periodical as shown in Figure 2. A permanent binding is thus obtained.
Modifications may be made. Thus, the adhesive may be applied to the liner in the form of permanent double sided self adhesive tape, for example that sold under the Trade Mark 3M Scotch grade 924. Alternatively, the line of adhesive 5b on the spine of the cover may be omitted so as to leave only the lines Sa, or viceversa.
In the modification shown in Figure 3, the cover consists of a single sheet of card or plastics with appropriate fold lines. In the modification shown in
Figure 4, the cover takes the form of a false spine for the book.
In a further modification, two end sheets of paper are employed, each of which has adhesive applied to both sides of one edge.
These end sheets are inserted between the sides of the book and the front and back of the cover during assembly, as shown in Figure 2.
A user may be supplied with a kit consisting of a cover and double sided adhesive tape with strippable coverings to enable him to perform the invention as described.
