Abstract

1412426 Adhesive tapes XEROX CORP 1 Nov 1972 [1 Nov 1971] 50335/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division B6] A binding member for books etc. comprises a flexible substrate 12 having a centrally disposed elongate area of heat activatable, low tack adhesive 13 of a width narrower than the width of the substrate and of a thickness greater than that of elongated flanking portions 18 of high tack adhesive 21 carried by the substrate on either side of said area. The adhesive 21 may be heat activatable and is more viscous, when heated, than the adhesive 13, or it may be pressure sensitive in which case it is covered by protective strips until used. The adhesive 13 may be applied as a stripe 14 or as spaced segments (26), Fig 6 (not shown) and tacked at 17 onto the substrate previously uniformly coated with adhesive 21. A book to be bound is placed upon the binding member aligned with the elongate area. The flanking portions are bent round to engage the outer pages or the covers of the book or the binding member may be extended so as to form the covers. Heat is then applied to activate the adhesive 13 which flows and binds the book, the adhesive 21 also being activated to adhere the member to the outer pages or covers of the book.
