J. FORD COMBINED CIGARETTE CASE ANT) ASH TRAY Filed June 2. 1923 Patented June 24, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE FORD, OF REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
Application filed June 2,
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, JEssE FORD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Re ina, in the Province of Saskatchewan an Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cigarette Cases and Ash Trays, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined cigarette cases and ash trays and the objects of the invention are to provide a simply and efiiciently constructed device of this character of neat appearance that can be readily carried in the breast pocket or otherwise in the same way as an ordinary cigarette case.
Further objects are to provide a device of this kind with a telescopic cover adapted to be used as a tray or to carry cigarettes.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially of a holder for cigarettes or the like having a cover provided with a telescopic casing extension adapted to form a tray when pulled out.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure,.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the device shut.
Figure 2' is a similar view open, with the casing portion of the cover pulled out to form a tray.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section.
Figure 4 is a section detail, showing the tongued and grooved connection between the cover and the extension or tray.
In the drawings, A is the device as a whole comprising a cigarette case 10 of any suitable form and made of any desirable mate rial and provided with a cover or lid 11 hingedly mounted thereon at 12. On this cover is slidably mounted a casing member 13 adapted to slide thereon by means of guideways 14 formed by the turned-down edges 15 of the lid or cover 11 in combina- 1923. Serial No. 643,008.
tion with the flanged sides 16 of the casing member 13, whereby the casing or tray 1nemher is designed to slide inwardly and outwardly on the lid.
17 is a double catch on the lid 11 adapted to securely hold the lid arid the slidable member thereon when closed. I The operation of the device is, from the drawings and foregoing description, apparent. In the closed position, as shown in Figure 1, the member 11 is slid home into position and the lid closed on the cigarette holding member 10, forming an ordinary cigarette case, while in open position, as shown in Figure 2, on the cover being opened, the member 11 is drawn outwardly to provide a receptacle for the ashes.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as. illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
A combined cigarette case and ash tray, comprising a casing adapted to hold cigarettes, and provided with a hinged lid formed with flanged sides, a duplicate casing formed with guideways in the sides adapted to slidably engage with the flanged sides of the lid, whereby in extended position the duplicate casing is designed to provide an ash tray, and whereby in closed position, it is designed to form part of the lid of the first mentioned casing, means for securing the duplicate casing and the lid in closed position on the first mentioned casing.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JESSE FORD. Witnesses:
LILLIAN MAY MCKAY, GEORGE STANLEY KENNEDY.
