SIMON SCI-IENDEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGARETTE AND MATCH BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Application filed April 5, 1909. Serial No. 487,924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON Scnnnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette and Match Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a box adapted for use as a cigarette and match box and has for its object to provide a box of this kind having separate or individual compartments for the cigarettes and matches.
A further object of the invention is to make the match compartment pivoted so that it may be swung in a plane beneath the compartment for cigarettes so that the latter may be readily removed from the box.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully de scribed and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my improvements with the match compartment or receptacle swung partly away from the cigarette compartment and the lid thereof partly raised; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the box closed, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the sliding member of the box.
In the embodiment illustrated the numeral 1 indicates the casing of the box which as shown is of approximately rectangular form and is closed at one end as 2, and open at its opposite end as 3, to receive the sliding member, at. As shown the sliding member comprises a bottom, 5, and sides 6, and is formed at its inner end with a pivoted section, 7, which forms a continuation thereof. The outer or opposite end of the sliding member is also provided with an outer pivoted section formed by a continuation thereof, 8, the ends, 9, of which are formed by continuations of the side pieces, 6, of the sliding member, 4, and the outer side piece, 10, of which is formed by the outer end piece of the sliding member. The outer section, 8, is separated from the body, 11, of the sliding member, and formed into a compartment, 12, for matches by an independent box-like section, 13, having a bottom, 14, end pieces, 15, which fit against the inner faces of the end pieces of the outer section, 8, an inner side piece, 16, which forms the inner Wall of the match compartment and a pivoted top, 17.
In practice, the cigarettes, cigars or tobacco are placed in the compartment, 12, and the matches in the match compartment. In using the device the sliding member is pulled out of the casing to a sufiicient extent to expose the outer section, 8, when the id, 17, is raised to permit the removal of one or more matches. The lid, 17, may be then closed and the outer section swung downward in a plane beneath the body of the sliding member to permit the ready removal of one or more cigarettes, cigars or a quantity of tobacco.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
1. I11 a box of the class described, a casing,
a sliding member adapted to be received by the casing, said sliding member having an outer pivoted section adapted to swing in a plane beneath the body thereof, a removable box-like member arranged in the pivoted section of the sliding member and forming a match receptacle in connection therewith, said box-like member being separate and distinct from the pivoted section of the sliding member, and comprising a bottom, inner side piece, end pieces, and a pivoted top piece.
2. In a box of the class described, a casing, a sliding member adapted to slide in the casing, said sliding member having an outer pivoted section adapted to swing in a plane beneath the body thereof, and a removable approximately rectangular box-like member In testimony whereof I have hereunto set comprising a bottom, a side piece, end pieces my hand in presence of two subscribing Witand a pivoted lid arranged in the pivoted nesses.
