Be it known that 1, FRANK HAGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Breese, in the county of Clinton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined MatchBoxes, Cigar-Rests, and Ash-Trays, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined match receptacles, cigar rests and ash trays and the primary objectof the invention is to provide a combined device of this character which is extremely simple in construction and one which will effectively carry out all of the purposes for which the same isdesigned.

A further object of the invention resides' in providing an improvedfdevice which. is inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very useful in practice.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.

While the match box 5 Vis snugly received between the walls of the casing l, at the box receiving end thereof, it is also desirable to prevent any possibility of the box dropping from the casing from any cause whatsoever and, to this end, the side edges of the opening formed by the cutting away of the bottom, are deflected, as shown at 8, whereby to bind tightly against one face of the cover of the box 5. Tt is obvious from this con struction that when the match box is inserted in the casing, the same is readily held in place until removed by hand.

The interior ofthe casing 1 is divided into compartments through the provision of a d'1- vision wall 9 therein. The one compartment receives the box 5 therein, while the other compartment, indicated as 10, forms a compartment for the reception of ashes, as will be hereinafter and more particularly set forth. In carrying outthis idea, the top wall 2 is cut away over this compartment 10, as indicated at 11, the cut away portion ter minating at a point adjacent the one end Thisl compartment 10 forms an ash tray as stated and the ashes from the lighted cigar or cigarette may be readily removed therefrom by striking the cigar or cigarette against the portions of the top surrounding the opening or cut away portion 11 therein. Tt must be here stated that the division wall 9 is partially held in place by means of a depending flange 12 formed on the top wall 2 at the edge of the opening 11 therein. vThis division wall is, of course, held iny place by' any preferred means but this depending flange forms a stop or the like against which said wall may contact.

Hinged to the top wall 2, at the edge of the opening 11 thereof,iis va covering plate 13 which, when in its lowered position, covers the opening 11 in the top wall. The outer edge of this covering plate is'provided with a depending flange 111 forming a finger piece whereby said coveringplate may be raised and lowered readily when desired. This covering plate is primarily provided for the purpose of providing the cigar rest and, to this end, a rest 15 is secured in place on the under 'face of the covering plate 13.

,lWhen the covering plate is turned to its open position torest on the upper face ofthe position so as to receive a cigar or cigarette therein. However, when the plate 13 is lowered over the opening 1l in the top wall, said rest is in its inoperative position. The compartment l0 forming the ash tray,`hav ing an open end, admits of the ashes or other trash received therein to be readily emptied therefrom.

From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the manner of applying the same to use will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided an improved combined device which will be extremely etlicient in carrying out all the purposes for which the same is designed. It will further be seen that 'the device is simple and durable in construction and one which will be very useful in practice.

While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions 'set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

Having thus described this invention, what I claim is':-

A device of the class described including a rectangular casing, the opposite ends whereofl being open, a partition within the casing dividing the same into two compartments, a boxslidably arranged Within one of the compartments, the top of the casing over the remaining compartment being cut out, a plate hingedly connected to the top of the casing'adjacent the inner end of the cut out portion and normally closing said compartment, the outer extremity of the plate .being angularly disposed to partially overlie the adjacent open end of the casing, and a cigar rest mounted upon the inner face of said plate.
