Description

R. H. TATLOW. in.
MATCH SAFE. APPLICATION FILED APR.22, 1914.
1,139,919. Patentd May18,1915.
RICHARD HENRY TATLOW, JR., OF DENVER, COLORADO.
. .MATCI-I-S'AFE.
i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD HENRY TAT-V Low, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Safes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in match safes and more particularly to safes of the type-shown and described in United a gas-range to use a fresh match each time a burner was lighted. y v
The object of my present invention 1s to construct a suitable receptacle for the depositing of the burnt or used matches and from which one or more of the same may conveniently be removed and, upon lgnitmg V the match from a lighted burner, use the flame thereof to lightadditional burnerson Y a gas-stove. By' thus utilizing the burnt or used matches after one burner of a gas-stove has been lighted great economy of matches is possible.
Another object of my improvement is to construct a match safe so that the fresh or unused matches may be conveniently removed and which owing to its novel con struction will always disclose to the observer the quantity of fresh matches stored therein. Still'another object is to construct a receptacle of this character that is economical to manufacture, having a minimum of parts to get out of order, and which is compact in its arrangement of parts. I
The above and other objects-I accomplish by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully explained and as more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, form-.
ing a part of this specification, wherein similar reference characters identify corresponding parts in, the various figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved match safe or receptacle; Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section thereof taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse Specification of Letters fatent.
vertical section ofFig.1. V 7 Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 repre sent the'front and rear walls respectively of my improved match safe which are provided at each end with parallel end-walls 3 that are arranged at substantially right angles to the plane offsaid front and rear'wall'sl A suitable bottom 4 is provided that com'- prises a plate extending from end-wall to thereof taken on line 3-3 wall where it is upturned to form a shallow tray 5 extending across substantiallythe en.- tirelength of'said receptacle.
The interior of the. receptacle is prefer-v ablydivid'ed transversely into two. vertical 7 Patented May 18, 1915.1 Application filed April 22, 1914. Serial no. 833,582.
compartments by a vertically disposed wall or partition 6 that, extends from the top to the bottom of the receptacle and has its] lower edge portion provided with an'exten' sion 7 that projects beyond the vertical plane i of thefront wall 1 and inclines downwardly toward and merges into the outer edge of the I tray 5, substantially as shown. 1
The lower portion of the front wall 1 is preferably cut away a short distance above elongated opening through which access may be had to the interior and at a point substantially in the center of width of theleft hand 35 compartment the lower edge of the front wall is recessed as shown at 8. The central portion ofthe front wall in front of the lying on the tray 5 fallingofl the ends thereof.
Atop or cover 10 hinged along its rear edge I to the upper edge of the rear wall closes the upper end of each compartment and the the bottom of'the receptacle to form the right hand compartment is preferably pro? v same is providedwith a circular or other opening 11 above theleft hand compartment. When in use a box of matches, from which the cover portion has been removed,
is slid into the right hand compartment so that the open portion of said box will face the slot 9'in the front wall. The cut away lower edge of said front wall permits of the removal of the matches whenever desired 65 end-walland fromjthe rear-wall to the front- I and after said matches have been used they are dropped into the other compartment through the opening 11 in the cover. However, when it is desired to light another burner on the gas-stove one of these burnt.
matches may easily be picked up oflf the tray 5 in. front of the cut-away portion of the front wall, the extension 7 of the dividing wall or partition preventing the mining of the used and unused matches resting on the tray.
For the purpose of providing asuitablestriker for'the unused matches, small strips of sand paper or other abrasive material 00 are secured to thefront and" SlClGWlllS-Oftlifi) or similar device:
Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim as new and desire t'o sec'ure' by- Letters Patent, is
1. A device 01 the kind specified compris ing a substantially rectangular receptacle divided transversely by a vertical partition intotwo compartments, the lower portions oi the front walls. of" both of which are cut away in substantially the same horizontal plane, a tray disposed across the entire width of said receptacle below the cutaway portions of said compartment-s, a cover for said receptacle provided with an opening above one of said compartments, and the front wall of the. opposite compartment provided with means whereby the interior thereof is dis closed.
2. A match-safe comprising two compartments disposed sideby side oneof which is adapted to receive a box of matcl'res, a cover therefor-provided with an openingabove the compartment next the match-box compartment, both: of said oompartmentshaving the lower portions of'their front walls cutaway in substantially the same'horizontal plane,
and a laterally disposed tray common to both-compartments extending across the entire width of said match-safe below the plane of thecutaway portions of the front wallsthereof.
In testimony'whereo'fl afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses:
