COMBINATION HOLDER AID CIGARETTE-12131101718836 ASE m1.
Application fled August 37, 1000. Serial Io. 181,980.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in comblnation holders and c1garette extinguishing ash trays and has forits principal object the provision of an im- 6 proved construction of this character which will be highly efiicient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the several objects of my invention is the provision of a one piece ash tray formed of porcelain or other material compatible with its purpose and having a simple combination and arrangement of parts functioning to receive the lighted end portions of cigarettes with a view to choking the cigarettes and effectively extinguishing the same and whereby this simple combination and arrangement of parts will safely hold the cigarettes during and after extinguishing thus avoiding danger of fire or the like.
A still further object of the invention Is the provision of an ash tray characterized as stated and also embodying compartments for the reception of a package of cigarettes and smokers articles and further with a provision for holding a box of matches.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of my invention, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspectlve view of the inven tion.
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the Views illustrated in the drawing.
My novel tray is preferably formed of one piece of porcelain, glass, or other appropriate material and comprises among other elements a body 10 definin a depression 11 for the accommodation of ashes and burnt matches or the like. In providing the depression 11 the body 10 defines an upstandmg flange 12 surrounding the depression 11 and formed in the top edge 13 of this flange 12 are transverse grooves 14, preferably semicircular in cross section, for the reception of adjacent portions of cigarettes or cigars or the stem of a pipe. The depression 11 provided by the body 10 is formed to one side of this body 14 is provided an extension 16 providing a compartment 17 adapted to accommodate smokers articles such for example cigarette holders or the .like. On the opposite sides of the body 14 the body '10 defines a groove 18 which extends around a substantially rectangular block 19. This groove 18 is adapted to receive the lower edge portions of the cover of a safety match box and serves to support the box in close proximity to the body 14.
Forwardly of the body 14 there is provided a transverse elongated slot 20 having its longitudinal walls 21 tapering downwardly and inwardly toward each other and the lower end portion 22 of this groove is opened to the interior of the depression 11 which provides an ash receptacle.
The groove 20 functions to receive the lighted end ortions of cigarettes and to effectively extinguish the same. By taperin the walls 21'of the groove 20 the light end portion of the cigarettes, when inserted in the groove 20, will be swedged and thus choked and in a short time extinguished.
Particular attention is directed to the fact that I prefer to locate the groove 20 inwardly of the depression 11 and forwardly of the body 14 thus avoiding accidental displacement of the cigarettes when being extinguished should the ash tray be jarred or moved about during the extinguishing of the cigarettes. It is apparent that in articles of this class where the extinguishing means is located along the eripheral edge of the ash tray, it is possi le that one or more 95 cigarettes being extinguished might be self displaced and cause damage resulting from ing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims. v a Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. An article of the class described including a body providing a. depressed portion serving as an ash receptacle, and a second body upstanding from. the-first mentioned body and providing a plurality of compartments and providing a groove formemes wardly of its front forthe'reception 01 the lighted end portion ofcigarettes, said groove having longitudinal wa pering .inwardl and downwar ly toward each other and opening into said ash receptacle.
s 2, An article of the class described c m-' prising a body provided with a transverse Q elongated slot having longitudinal wall portions tapering downwardly and toward each ortions taaving a -lower' end portion other, said body defining a depression pro Y viding an ash receptacle,'the lower end portion of said slot opening into said ash receptacle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. HENRY EVENS.
