Fig. 9 is a view similar to Figs. 1 and 6 of a further embodiment of the invention; andA Figs. 10 and 11 are fragmentary vertical cross sectional views taken along the lines Ill-IU and II-I I ofFig. 9.
Referring now to the drawings and rst to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, it may be noted that the smokers accessory is indicated as a Whole by reference character IIJ. The accessory is shown as being a pipe smokers ash tray suitable for use upon a table, desk, or the like, or upon a special stand. The tray is provided with a central depressed ash-receiving portion I2 at the center of which is located a pipe knocker I4 made of cork or the like and detachably mounted upon a pipe reamer I6 above the lowest level of the portion I2, as disclosed and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 678,953, led contemporaneously herewith, now abandoned.
The ash tray is constructed in suitable manner as by die casting andl from some suitable material, such as an aluminum alloy. The ash-receiving portion I2 is dened by` a relatively thin bowlshaped wall I8 terminating in an upper relatively flat annular top 20. The accessory includes also a generally verticallyV disposed annular outer peripheral wa11 22. The tray is completed by a base 24 made of suitable material, such as fibre board, suitably secured to the underside of the tray as by a plurality of spaced apart screws 26, see Figs. 1 and 3. In order to prevent marring the table or other support, the bottom of the base may be provided with a felt pad 28.
The accessory may have detachably secured to it one or more, preferably two, picks 30 each of which includes a ball-shaped handle 32 and a sharp pointed pick defining element 34, as de scribed and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 678,954 filed contemporaneously herewith, now abandoned.
In accordance with the present invention the accessory is provided with a compartment for holding pipe cleaners. This compartment is indicated as a whole by reference character 40 and in the embodiment of the invention now being described it is preferably located at the outer peripheral portion of the ash tray and it is preferably open at both ends, the openings being indicated by reference characters 42 and 44.
The compartment, in accordance with another feature of the invention. lis so constructed. and
arranged that the pipe cleaner elements are bent when located in the compartment, whereby they are frictionally held against accidental dislodgement or loss. Accordingly, the curved outer wall 22 is utilized as the outer wall of the compartment and spaced from it is an approximately concentric inner wall 46. This wall, which also includes integral end portions 48 and 50, is formed integrally with the tray. The inner wall extends downwardly into abutting engagement with the base 24, whereby the latter constitutes also the bottom of the compartment.
The top of the compartment is preferably constituted by a relatively thin and lig-ht weight arcuate plate 52 positioned by arcuate shoulders 54 and 56 in the outer wall 22 and the bowl Wall |8, respectively. The plate is secured by a pair of spaced apart screws 58, see Figs. l and 4.
The size of the compartment may be Vvaried as desired, but it is preferred that it be sufficiently large to hold a full pack of twenty four pipe cleaners. The curvature and the construc- -tion of the openings 42 and 44 are such that even a single pipe cleaner will be bent slightly and held. For this reason, the adjacent edges 42A and 44A of the openings located at the ends of one wall (the outer one) are disposed so as to be substantially along a line tangential to the other wall 46, as most clearly evident from Fig. l.
From the foregoing detailed description of lan ash tray constructed in accordance with the invention, it will be noted that there isA provided a compartment for holding pipe cleaners in suehmencer that they are not .likely to be dislodged or displaced and wherein they are frictionallyheld ready for instantaneous use. A pipe vcleaner may be removed from the compartment as by pressing a number of pipe cleaners out through one end and then taking one of them. The remainder can then be returned vin the compartment by the application of pressure thereto from the opposite or projecting end.
In smaller ash trays it is not always desirable to Vhave the compartment at the outer peripheral portion as in the above described lembodiment, and rather, it is preferable to have it extending approximately diametrically across the accessory as illustrated in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 6, '7 and 8, to which reference is now had.
The ash tray 60 of this second embodiment is somewhat smaller than the one previously described. It includes a central depressed ashreceiving `portion `[52 dened by a bowl-shaped wall 64. Instead of having a pair of picks and a pair of cigar-receiving grooves it includes a single pick 30, a single cigar-receiving groove 66 opposite the pick, and a pair of oppositely located cigarette-receiving grooves 6B and 70. The cork knocker 14 is of somewhat diierent construction, it having a supporting and heat resisting metallic liner '|.6 adapted to surround the reamer I6, also as disclosed and claimed in my previously'referred to copending application Serial No. 678,953.
The pipe cleaner compartment 80 is constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention, i. e., it is slightly curved in order frictionally to hold the pipe cleaners in place. The compartment extends approximately diametrically across the tray and has openings 82 and 84 at its opposite ends. It is defined by a pair of side walls 86 and 88 cast as integral parts of the trav. a top Wall oonstituted by a. portion of the wall 64, and a bottom constituted by a base plate 90 secured to the underside of the tray by a plurality of screws 92. A felt pad 94 may be secured to the underside of the base plate.
As in the nrst-described embodiment of the invention, the sides 82a and 84a of the openings 82 and 84 and at the ends of wall 88 Yare substantially along a line tangential to the other compartment wall 86, thereby insuring that pipe cleaners placed into the compartment are bent slightly and thus frictionally held against accidental and undesired dislodgment. Pipe cleaners may be inserted into and removed from the compartment just as in the first-described embodiment of the invention and it is believed that further description of the construction and advantages of the invention need not be repeated here.
The base plate need not be as thick as the base plates 24 and 90 of the previously described embodiments of the invention as a thinner plate rcan be used and a pipe cleaner compartment of the same height can be obtained by using a separate bottom wall defining plate. A construction of this character is disclosed in Figs. 9, 10
and ,11, to which reference is now had.
The pipe cleaner compartment |00 is illustrated in an ash tray like the one illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, except as modified to vutilize a thin base plate |02, which is preferably a steel Stamping, and a compartment bottom Wall defining plate |94. To facilitate assembly and to improve appearance, the base plate |02 is provided with an annular upturned flange |06 derside of the tray as by four screws IIB received in threaded openings in bosses ||2 extending downwardly from the bottom ||4 of the tray.
The compartment bottom wall delining plate |04 is generally arcuate in shape. It is secured to the underside of the tray below a top plate ||6 (which corresponds to top plate 52) by a pair of spaced apart screws ||8 received in threaded openings in the dependent bosses |20. These bosses are preferably formed integrally with the inner compartment wall |22 which, in turn, is formed integrally with the tray. The inner wall terminates in end portions |24, corresponding to end portions 48 of compartment 40, and which are located adjacent the compartment openings |26 and |28.
From the foregoing description it may be noted that the compartment |00 is of substantially the same size as compartment 40 as determined by the height of the bosses |22 and that the bottom plate |02 is entirely separate from it and is relatively thin. The use and further advantages of the compartment are believed to be evident from the previously described embodiments of the invention and they will not be repeated here.
-While but three embodiments of the invention have been described in detail, it should be understood that the invention may take various forms and that the described details are not intended to be limitative of the invention except as set forth in the accompanying claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
