The present invention relates to ash trays, candy dishes and similar receptacles and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character adapted to be conveniently applied to the corner of a card table or the like.

Another object of the invention is to provide such a device of such construction that it may fit over the corner portion of the top of a card table or the like so as to occupy small space, without appreciably interfering with the use of the surface of the table, such as when layHng cards.

A further o ject is to provide such a device which may be used on the surface of a. table or other support as well as being applicable to the corner portion of a table, and a still further ob'ect is the provision of novel means for holdlng the device in place on the corner portion of a table in order to prevent the device from being shifted out of position or accidentally knocked off the table. y

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

A sheet metal shell or frame is provided to fit over the corner portion of the table, and comprises the outer sides 10, bottom 11 and inner diagonal side 12 forming a trian gular tray. The outer sides are preferably constructed of one piece or strip of suitable sheet metal, and are arranged at a right angle with one another so as to fit astridek the corner portion of a table top, and the bottom 11 and side 12 may be composed of the same piece or blank of sheet metal. The bottom 11 is soldered or otherwise secured to the sides 10 and the sides 10 and 12 are soldered or otherwise secured together Where they meet. The sides 10 project downwardly below the bottom 11 so as to form-a depending apron to extend downwardly across the edges of the table top with the bottom 11 seated on the corner ortion of the table. This ena'bles the shell) to be conveniently placed on the corner of a table.

A tray or dish 13 which may be of glass or other suitable material is removably disposed in the shell and has a rim 14 to seat on the upper edges of the sides 1() and 12, said tray or dish being of triangular form the same as the shell. Such tray may be used for receiving cigar and cigarette ashes or may be used for holding candy or other confections. The tray 13 may be readily removed for emptying and cleaning it, and may be supported on small rubber or resilient. cushions 15 secured on the bottom 11 of the shell.

In order to hold the device in place on the corner of a table a clamping member is 'carried by the shell at the corner between the sides 10, and is mounted in a vertical guide 16 which comprises a sheet of metal fbent to form the guide proper which is of U-shaped section, with flanges 17 extending from the sides thereof and overlapping and soldered or otherwise secured to the sides 10. A sheet metal piece 18 slot 19 in the bend of the guide 16 near Vthe lower end ofthe guide, and is soldered or otherwise secured to the guide 16 and corner portion of the sides 10, said piece 18 projecting outwardly beyond the guide 16 to provide a nger piece 20 for convenience in applying and removing the device. A vertical clamping rod or member 21 is slidable through the piece 18 within the guide 16 and is provided at its lower end with an arm 22 extending inwardly under the bottom 11 and having an upstanding spur or tooth 23 to lengage under the top of the table, the corner portion between the sides 10 being cut away or open, as at 24, below the piece 18 to accommodate the arm 22. A knob or button 25 is screw-threaded or otherwise secured on the upper end of the rod 21, and a piece 26 is fitted on the rod for sliding movement within the guide 16, with a coiled spring 27 surrounding the rod within the guide and confined between the pieces 18 and 26. A spacer sleeve 28 is fitted on the rod between the button 25 and piece 26. Such piece `26 has a notch 29 fitting astride the corner portion of the sides 10, thereby normally closextends through a lou ing the upper end of the guide 16,. and also preventing the piece Q6 from rotatmg w1thin the guide. 'lhe rod Q1 has a flat slde 30 extending upwardly from a. point below the piece :26, and the aperture 3l of the piece 2G through which the rod extends is of corresponding non-circular form, thereby preventing the rod 21 from turning.

In placing the shell over the corner portion ot a table, the toretinger of the hand may be placed under the linger piece 20 and the thumb on the button 25, tor conveniently hamlling the device, and by pushing down on the button Q5, the arm Q2 is depressed in order that it can move under theI corner of the table. top in placing thel shell thereon. liy depressing the button Q5 this, through the sleeve 2S, depresscs the piece 2G so as to compress the spring 2T, and when the button Q5 is released, the rod Q1 is moved upwardly to cause the arm 22 to engage under the table top and clamp the bottom 1l firmly on the table. This will prevent the device from being displaced, although it may be readily removed by holding the piece Q() and button .25 between the linger and thumb and pressing the button downwardly.

As shown in Figs l to 5, inclusive, one side 10 has an outwardly oll`set portion 32 t'orming a receptacle or pocket for a pack ot cigarettes, a deck of cards, or the like, and an angular piece 33 ot sheet metal has its ends soldered or otherwise secured to the bottom 12 and lower edge portion of the portion 32 to provide a bottom for the receptacle thus provided.

The other side l0, as shown, also has an outwardly otl'set portion 34. providing a receptacle or pocket tor a. box of matches, as seen in Fig. l, and a piece 35 is secured within the portion L5-L to hold the box of matches open b v supporting the inside slide of the box while the outer shell is slid downwardly, as seen in Fig. 1.

As shown in Fig. 6 the sides 10 of the shell are plain, the portions 32 and Si having been omitted.

The. sides 1() in extending downwardly below the bottom ll not only enable the device to lit, astride the corner ot a table top, but also enable the device to be seated on the surface ot a table, or other support, the arm Q2 of the clamping rod or member Qt being moved above the plane of the lower edges ot the sides l0 when the device is detached from the corner of a table, so that the clamping means will not interfere with the seating of the device on a tlat surface.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A device of the character described comprising a shell having a bottom to seat. on the corner portion o? a table top and sides extending upwardly from the margin ot said bottom, two of said sides extending below said bottom to tit astride said corner portion.

2. A device of the character described comprising a shell having a bottom to seat on the corner portion ot a table top and sides extending upwardly from the margin ot said bottom, t-wo of said sides extending below said bottom to lit astride said corner portion, and means assembled with said shell at the corner between said two sides and having an arm extendingT between said sides below said bottom to engage under upwardly said corner portion.

A device of the character described having a bottom to s `at on the corner portion of a table top and sides extending upwardly from said bottom, two of said sides extending below said bottom tg lit astride said corner portion, one of said two sides having an ontw-.irdly offset portion forming a pocket beyond the corresponding edge ot said bottom.

A device of the character described comprising a bottom to seat on the corner portion of a table top, sides extending upwardly from said bottom, two of said sides extending below said bottom to lit astride said corner portion, a vertical guide at the adjacent ends of said two sides, a vertical rod slidable in said guide and extending above the guide to be depressed by pressure on the upper end thereof, the lower end of said rod having an arm projecting below said bottom to engage under said corner portion. and a coiled spring surroumlin; r said guide for moving the rod upwardly.

5. A device of the character described comprising a bottom to seat on the corner portion of a table top, sides extending upwardly from said bottom, two of said sides extending below said bottom to lit asti-ide said corner portion. a vertical guide at the, adjacent ends of said two sides, a vertical rod in said guide and extending above the guide, a coiled spring surrounding said rod within the guide, a portion within the guide on which said spring seats, said rod havingr an arm below said portion extending under said bottom to engage under said corner portion, a piece on the rod movable within the guide and bearing on said spring, a button secured on the upper end of the rod, and a sleeve between said button and piece.
