MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 2 8, 1919. Serial No. 273,672.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Ro /rem, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Cranford, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certan new and useful Improvements in Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to match boxes and has reference more particularly to a box designed to be carried in the pocket of the user and likewise adapted to receive and hold the shuck of an ordinary safety match box with the striking or friction faces thereof exposed for use.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the box with the lid thrown partially open;
Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view thereof;
Fig. 3 a top plan View with the cover partially open;
Fig. 4 a front elevation, the cover being closed and a portion of the box broken away showing the shuck in part;
Fig. 5 a longitudinal vertical sectional view; and
Fig. 6 a top plan view looking directly down onto the closed cover or lid.
The main object of the invention is to produce a structure which is relatively flat and which by reason of its shape will not be bulky and hence may bereadily carried in the users pocket. The box body in transverse cross section has the form of a rhomboid, that is having two long sides or faces 1 and 2, and the narrow ends 3 and 4, each of the latter being provided with an elongated opening 5. The box is provided with a bottom 6 and a hinged lid or cover 7 preferably provided with a catch 8 which, when the lid is closed, springs into an open ing 8 formed adjacent the upper edge of the front face or side 1. The lid or cover 7 will, of course, be given the same outline as the box body, in other words, has the.
shape of a rhomboid.
The shuck of the ordinary safety-match box is designated by 9, Figs. 2, 3 and 4, which, when partially collapsed, fits closely within the box with the striking or friction faces 10 exposed through the openings 5. In placing the matches in position wlthin the box, the slide of the ordinary safety match box is withdrawn from its shuck, the shuck then partially collapsed or flattened and slid endwise, while still collapsed, into the box constructed as above set forth. This brings the striking or friction faces 10 into exposed position through the elongated openings 5. The matches removed from the slide of the ordinary safety match box are then placed in the shuck which latter by reason of the spring thereof, due to its partial collapse, closely bugs or bears against the inner faces of the walls 1, 2, 3 and 4t of the box.
The box is designed to be produced from precious or semi-precious metals and the corners will be rounded off so that the structure is at once artistic in appearance and lends itself to being carried in ones pocket without undue wear thereon. The lid may be readily opened by merely exerting a slight pressure on the front or face 1 adjacent the opening 9 which will release the latch 8 therefrom.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a holder for a safety match box such holder having openings in one or more of its walls through which the striking surface of the box is exposed, and no claim is made to such a structure broadly.
What is claimed is:
1. A match box or holder for the shuck I carried in ones pocket, comprising a boxlike structure having the form of a rhomboid in cross section with an opening in at least one of the narrow sides thereof for the exposure therethrough of the striking surface of the inserted shuck, and a lid for the structure the shuck being retained in its position in the structure by reason of the frictional resistance thereof with the walls of the holder due to the spring of the shuck effected by the partial deformation thereof.
2. In combination with a box-like structure having the form in cross section of a rhomboid, a hinged lid therefor and a bot- Patented May 25, 1920.
tom, the structure having an opening formed in each of the narrow sides thereof; and a partially collapsed shuck of an ordinary safety-match box placed Within the struc- 5 ture aforesaid, said shuck closely fitting against the interior faces of the Walls of the structure and held thereto by the inherent spring action of the shuck with the striking or friction faces thereof exposed through the openings aforesaid. 10 In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
