SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,301, dated October 2'7, 1903. Application filed May 28, 1903. Serial No. 1533,400. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. FEIBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Boxes or the Like, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to combine with a cigarette or other like box of preferred construction having a hinged cover a supply of matches for use in lighting the cigarettes and a striking-surface therefor.

It is the object of my invention to avoid specially constructing a box to hold both cigarettes, (be, and matches, so as to add no expense to the manufacture of the box itself, and to provide more eflicient means for carrying both the cigarettes'and matches without injury or damage to either.

Heretofore it has been customary to either sell cigarettes without matches attached to the receptacle, or when they have been attached the devices have necessitated a box specially constructed for the purpose, which objections it is my object to overcome.

My invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts herein described and shown, and further pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar numerals represent corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a cigarettebox constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 00 a; of Fig. 1.

1 represents a cigarette-box of the usualcon struction, having the bottom 2 and the sides 3. The top is provided with acover 4, hinged to the box at 5. Inside this cover I provide a row of matches 6. These may be made of a piece of material split to form the matchshanks, the endbeing left in a continuous piece scored at 7, so as to enable the matches to be torn off. The matches may be placed the full length of the cover or part thereof,-

according to the quantity to be placed in the box. I also provide a striking surface or strip 8, on which the matches may be lighted. This I prefer to secure at the base of the match-strip, as shown, and for a simple construction I have secured both the matches and striking-strips to the cover by passing therethrough a staple 9, the latter passing through the striking material, through the match-strip, and thence through the box-v cover, clenching the same on the outside;

This may be done before the usual decorative paper is applied to the outside of the cover, so that the ends of the staple will not show on the outside.

In this construction the cigarette dealer may provide, with minimum expense, a supply of matches with each box of cigarettes sold. The matches being inside the hinged lid or cover, they take up but very little space and are protected against accidental ignition by the box, they being entirely inclosed when the box is closed.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- H A box for cigarettes comprising a body portion 1, a cover 4. hinged to said body at one side thereof, matches 6 formed on a strip, a strip of igniting material, and a staple passin g through said ignitiu g material and matchstrip and securing them to the inner side of said cover, substantially as described.
