ADOLPH SVSTIEFEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING PAP R BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,162, dated March 19, 1895.
I Application filed January 18, 1895. Serial 110.,535358. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH'S. STIEFEL, a
'citizen of the United States, residing at New the same, reference being had to the accompa-v nying'drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to the class of folding paper boxes specially designed for confectionery and small commodities, and the object in view is to provide a box which shall present in outline and general appearance the fac simile of a church, house, building or similar structure, when set up:
To thisend the invention consists of a folding boxof a special configuration which has bottom flaps and lock therefor of any approved pattern, to form the bottom of the box, and an upper side extension, so constructed as to form a closing flap and present the appearance of a roof, all as hereinafter fully described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figurel is a View of the box blank proper, forming the sides and bottom of the box, and cover supports, and Fig. 2 is a view of a secondary blank to be attached to the main blank by gumming or otherwise to form the box cover. Fig. 3 shows the bottom of the box with the flaps closed. Figs. 4 and 5 are, end and side views respectively of the closed box, and Fig. 6 illustrates the closing action of the cover.
The blank A is cut of a length sufficient to form the four sides of a box and with the end extension at, which is to beattached to the opposite end of the blank, by gumming or otherwise. Crease lines 1), b, b, 12, mark the corners of the box, andthe intervening sections terminate at the top in the angular extensions, a, a a a and at the bottom the several sections have the proper flap extensions 7 C, D, E and F for forming'the bottom of the box. The flaps O and E are shown provided with tongues and slots respectively for forming a look, but any'flap lock may be employed that is suitable for the purpose. Crease lines for the bottom flaps are indicated at c, d, e and f. I Y
Extending out from one of the sides of each of the angular top extensions, a and a there are triangular flaps, a and (1 with crease lines between a, a and a a, respectively, and the cuts shown at a and a are for the insertion of the ends of a tape handle, G.
The secondary blank H, forming the box cover, is rectangular in shape, with the end extensions, h and h the former being a hinge flap for attaching it to the main blank at the base of the angular piece a as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and to hold one end of the tape handle, and the latter forming a tongue for holding this cover flap closed. A
crease line at it marks the bend of the flap over the apex of the angular box ends. The width of this cover piece is greater than the width of the box, so that it extends over the ends of the box and thus insures a close fit between the cover flap and the box ends, as well as accentuating the effect of a roof. It will be observed that the angular extensions, a a come inside of the tape handle, when the box is in use, and serve to hold the handle distended, as well as forming ears for the attachment of the tape ends, while they also carry out the general design and efiect sought for. The extension at also forms a guiding surface for directing the tongue it of the cover flap down into its slot, when closing down the cover.' This slot for the tongue of the cover is formed by the bottom edges of the flaps a a and the inner face of the piece a at the base of the triangle. When the box is set up the flaps a a liein a plane perpendicular to the plane of the ends,- a' and a and parallel with the inclined surface of the front of the cover fiap when it is closed down, the points of the flaps (1 a just meeting. There is thus formed a slot between their bottom edges and the inner face of a which receives the tongue If, and the flaps a 0. also serve the further purpose of stiffening the gable ends, a, a and preventing them from being pushed either in or out when the box is filled, the the flaps a a lying just beneath the cover flap and on top of the contents of the box.
The general effect of the box may be-enhanced by ornamentation printed or embossed on the box as indicated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, but the same is nota necessary adjunct of the invention.
\Vhat I claim as new is 1. A four sided folding box having bottom flaps and lock therefor, angular extensions at the top of the several sections forming both the sides and ends of the box, a handle attached to the angular extensions at the top of the side sections, and a cover flap attached within one of the box sides, said cover flap being wider than the length of the box and adapted to fold down over the tops of the box ends, with a tongue for fastening down the cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A folding box having angular extensions at the top of two of the opposed sections forn1- ing the sides of the box, with inwardly turned opposed flaps carried by the same respectively on one edge, and a cover flap extending up from one of the intermediate sides of the box and adapted to fold down over the tops of the box ends, said cover having a tongue which fits in between the edges of the inwardly turned flaps and the side of the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPH S. S'IIEFEL.
