PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,726 dated December 21, 1886.
Application filed October 25, 1886. Serial No. 217,120. (No model.)
to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the fiat paper blank used in the manufacture of my improved box. Fig. 2'is a perspective view of the finished box, showing theisame open. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the complete and finished box, showing it closed. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal transverse section through the box on line m.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the plane denoted by the line y y and Fig. 6
g is a horizontal cross-section on the line z z.
Like letters of reference indicate correspond- .ing parts in the several figures.
My invention has relation to boxes made of paper, pasteboard, thin wooden veneers,or similar material, and adapted for holding cigars or cigarettes, playing-cards, confections, 840.; and it consists in the improved construction of a box of that class, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
My improved box is made from a single piece of paper or other suitable material, which is cut to form a fiat blank of the shape and gen eral construction shown in Fig. 1. By reference to this figure, it will be seen that this blank consists of two parts, A and B, forming, respectively, the front side and back of the finished box, and connected by the bottom piece, 0. Said bottom piece has its sides extended to form triangular wings or flaps D D, and the parts A and B are similarly provided with side flaps, E E and F F, corresponding in width to v the width of the triangular flaps D from the side flaps E E by two triangular webs, H H- one on each side. A score or crease (denoted by the line 0 0) extends crosswise of the parts E A E, separating them from the parts or extensions H G H, and between the two side s'cores a a and b b, an opening, I, is cut in the blank, which further separates the part A from the flap or extension G, and which may have an enlargement, J, if desired, although such enlargement is not necessary and may be omitted. The part B, between the side flaps F F, is scored on the back, as indicated by the broken line marked d d, to allow its upper part, B, to be bent backward, and said upper part, B, is provided with an extension, K, which forms the top or cover of the box, and has a suitably-shaped tongue or tuck, K. The two side flaps F F have oblique cuts ff, extending from their outer edges to the back score, dd, whereby wings F a d F are formed, the upper part of each of WhlOh has an extension, F, which is separated from the cover-flap K by a cut, 9, extending from the top of said flap to the cross-crease a b. In folding this blank to form the box the parts H G H are doubled upon the parts E A E, on the inside, as shown, whereby it will be seen that said doubled parts will stiffen and reenforce the upper part of the completed box., The side flaps F F are bent at right angles to the middle part or back piece, B, lapped over the side flaps E E of the part A, and glued or cemented to the same; but the wings F F, above the flaps F F, are not so fastened to the inner flaps or sides, E E, but
are left free to swing back with the upper part,
B, when the box is opened and it is desired to I exhibit the contents of the same without removing them.
In closing the box the extensions or flaps F F are first folded over the open top, after which the top part or cover, K, is bent over the top and fastened by inserting the tongue I by a single operation before folding, and as the box is made with double sides and a re'enforced top, it is not easily crushed out of shape When carried in the pocket.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The herein-described flat blank for the manufactnreof boxes, consisting of the part A, having side flaps E E, extension H G H, and slot or aperture I, part 0, having wings D D, and part B B, having side flaps F F, top K, and tongue or tuck K, said side flaps F having oblique outs f, whereby wings F are formed, provided with extensions F, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture,
l the hereinbefore described box, consisting of a EMIL L. MEYER.
