A?" Til/f74 A BiIBERTO E. CARLANTE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAPER BOX.
To all 'La/102m it `may concern Be it known. that I, ARIBERTO E. OIAR- LAx'rn,-a, subject of the King of Italy, residi ing at Boston, inthe county of Suffolk and State of Mass chusetts, have invented new and useful Improvenients in Pa er Boxes, of which the following vis a speciheation,
rIhis invention relates to improvements in paper boxes. ,More particularly it relates to duplex boxes, the purpose being to provide a box having theadvantagesot construction and of operation of that herein disclosed, iirw-hich'a .singlet pieoeof pasteboard, withits flaps duly fastened, has the appearance and ease of handling, of a single box, when closed, but `which really constitutes two boxes.` Such a duplex box is convenient for containing two articles that require associati( n together, such as cigarettes and matches; cir sedlitz powders of two varieties; or thread in one box and' needles, scissors, etc., in the other.
The object of the patent is to protect whatever novelty and utility exists in the construction herein described, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa side elevation showing a box embodying the invention,.closed; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly opened and in section; Fig. 3 is an end elevation in section on the line 3-8 of Fig. 1; Fig. l is a plan of ablank used in making. the box; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view, of a detail that may be used.
Referring to the drawings the box illustrated is comprised, for the most part, of a single piece of cardboard which is illustrated in Fig. 4. The various parts of this piece are numbered in order that the positions which they assume in the completed box may be readily identified, it being understood that the blank illustrated in Fig. 4 is to be folded/ on the dotted lines shown in Fig. 2, its forward end; it being understood' that this flap 16 is long enough to cover Specification-of Letters Patent.
Application led October 5, 1812A Serial No. 724,043.
the full height of the double box as illustrated in-Fig. 2, although it has been necessary to shorten the representation a little in Fig. -1 in order to conform-'to the limits of the sheet of drawing. The flaps 11 which Aare attached to the top 11 constitute the into position, the edges 11 and 15 abutting `together in the same plane and constituting stops for each other. To this end these edges are cut with oblique edges, that on the 'flap 11 running from the corner at the hinge 17 down to the, level of the bottom 13, whence the Hap continues straight beside the edge of the bottom 13; and that of the 'flap 15 ruiming from the corresponding corner, which is at the outer end of its box, and then continuing in a horizontal direction to the hinge 18 at the level of the top of' its box, which is the same as that of the bottom of the upper box. It will be understood that the corners of the flaps 10 and 11 where they come together may be held by stays 19 applied in the usual way; and that the other corners where llaps come together may be so fastened, as indicated by the reference numerals 19, particularly where the flaps 13 which constitute the sides of the upper box are joined to the back l2 of that box and where the sides 15 are joined to the back 14 of the lower box and to the front 1G of the upper box. In place of these stays any other suitable method of fastening the parts together may be employed such as covering the parts with a decorative paper.
The box thus described is complete and is made of one piece with its fastenings. In such a box the part marked 20 in Fig. 2 is absent and also the part marked 21 in the same figure. These are stli'ening pieces substantially in the form illustrated in Fig. 5, which shows in detail the shape of the part 21. The part 2() is ot similar shape. I'Vhen the part 20 is present the cover 11 shuts down upon its top and the edge oi' part 10 shuts down upon the edge vi part 14, Fig. 2. When a box so constructed `is opened, the right hand portion of the upart 20 constitutes the front of the box and
