ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,252, dated J' une 2, 1891.
Application filed August 29, 1890. Serial No. 363,418. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. THEOBALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of envelopes such as are designed for the inclosing and mailing of letters, printed Inatter, &c.
The objects of my invention are to produce a neat and substantial envelope of such construction as to admit of its being produced without unnecessary waste of material and in a simple and inexpensive manner, as hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claim. v
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure l is a view of the address side of the improved envelope having printed thereon the permanent postage-stamp of the Government. Fig. 2 is a view of the blank from which said en velope is formed, showing the same before folding.
A represents the blank which is to be bent to forni the improved envelope. The blank is divided into upper and lower portions a d', which portions are of nearly equal size. The upper portion a is provided with lateral flapproducing projections l?, which extend outwardly slightly beyond the body of the blank and have their upper and lower corners cut away or beveled at b. The upper portion a of the blank is provided with an extension c, which forms the envelope-flap. This flap c has its ends c2 parallel to each other and preferably has its outer corners beveled, and upon its long edge, which i-s parallel with the long edge of the lower portion a of the blank, is formed a tongue h, which projects from the edge of the-flap cand forms a part thereof, and this tongue, which is to receive and form a portion of the stamp, is provided on its under side, as well as the flap c, with a suitable adhesive substance, whichadmits of its permanent attachment tothe face of the envelope when the flap is bent downward, dampened, and pressed upon said' face.
In forming an envelope from the hereindescribed blank the lower portion a of the blank is .folded against the inner face of the upper portion a, the line of flexure being indicated by the dotted line d. The lower portion a is of such height as to extend, when folded, to within a short distance of the baselinefof the flap c, as shown by the dotted line e. of Fig. l of the drawings. This having been accomplished, the short side iiaps b alle bent inward and over the lateral edges of the portion a', to which said flaps are permanently secured by Inucilage or other suitable substance. The mouth or upper end of the receptacle thus formed may be closed, as in Fig. 1 of the drawings, by bending downward the top iiap c. I employ the flap side of the envelope as the address side, thus leaving the opposite and plain side for the reception of advertising or other printed matter. Owing to the approximate parallelogram form of the blank, the waste of paper in cutting said blank will be very small, as the space formed between the projecting side iiaps of the portion a of one blank may be utilized in the formation of one of the side flaps of another blank.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim- The envelope-blank A, having the portions a a of its body of uniform width, laterallyprojecting iiaps b on the upper portion a, said iiaps having their edges parallel with the ends of the lower portion a of the blank, the sealing-flap c, having its ends c2 parallel to each other and its long edge parallel with the long edge of the lower portion ctlnearly its whole length, with a projecting gummed tongue h on one side of the cent-er of said iiap c, and a postage-stamp having a part thereof printed upon the flap c and a part upon the tongue 7i, substantially as described.
