GUSTAV L. JAEGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SH OW-BOX FO R LACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,273, dated September 14, 1880.
7 Application filed July 31, 18E0.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV L. JAEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Show-Boxes for Laces, 850., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to packing lace, embroidery, rufiling, or other goods of like charactor for transportation and sale; andit consists in certain novel features, hereinafterfully described, and pointed out in the claims.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is afront view of the show-box as it appears when closed and made in the form of an envelope. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof with a portion of the closing-flap broken away to expose other parts. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same when open. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the package when open and made in the form of a box. Fig. 5 is aplan or top view thereof. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the same when closed. Fig. 7 shows a modification of the display-openin Fig. 8 shows a modification of the reel.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates a reel, hinged at one edge to a base or support, B, whichis formed, preferably, by one of the sides of an envelope or box, (3, inclosing the reel. This reel A serves to receive and hold the goods to be packed, and by simply swinging the reel to an inclined position, as by taking hold of its free edge, any desired length of goods can be taken off, while the reel remains a fixture of the base or support. I
The base or support B is made a part of the envelope or box C, in order to afford a protection to the goods wound on the reel A, the envelope or box being suitably constructed to inelose the reel and at the same time to allow its adjustment for the removal of the goods.
In the envelope orbox G, I usually form an opening, D, for displaying the goods contained on the reel A, and in Figs 1, 3, and 5 I have shown this opening as being made in a solid portion or side of llllGBllVGlOPG or box; but it can also be produced by so constructing the envelope 0 that its edges are left apart from or do not meet each other when the envelope is closed, as shown in Fig. 7
(No model.)
The reel A is attached to the envelope or box 0, whether hinged or otherwise, in such a manner that it is removable, and hence the reel can be filled apart from the envelope or box, as in a reeling-machine, which is a desideratum.
The reel A has a substantially rectangular shape, and the same can be made of wire, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5, and G, or of card-board or other similar material, as shown in Fig. 8. When the reel A is made of wire it is hinged to the envelope or box 0, preferably by springin g or inserting the free ends thereof into holes a a formed in the envelope, as shown in Fig. 3, or into staples a a, fastened to the box, as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, while, when the reel is made of card-board or the like, it is hinged to the envelope or box, preferably by means of a cord or band, I), catching under tongues b, (one or 1nore,) which areformed in the reel, as shown in Fig. 8. Either of these methods of hinging the reel A permits the same to be taken off and replaced at will 5 but it is obvious that various other modes of hinging the same with a like result may be devised.
Beneath the reel A is arranged a swinging leaf, E, (see Figs. 4, 5, and 6,) which is connected to the closing flap of the envelope or box, and serves to lift or swing one edge of the reel partially out of the envelope or box when the latter is opened, as indicatedin Fi 4. In this example the leaf E is applied to the envelope as made in the form of a box, and the leaf is left entirely detached, the same resting against one side of the box at one edge, and being connected to the closing flap or cover of the box at the other edge by means of bands 0, so as to partake of a portion of the movement of the flap or cover.
The envelope illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, is constructed with side flaps, G 0 one of which has a locking-hook, F, while the other has a slit, G, for the reception of the hook, so that by simply inserting the hook in the slit, as indicated in Fi 2, the two flaps are firmly held upon each other. The envelope is also constructed with end flaps, 0 G both having a slit, H, to which are fitted tongues or tabs I I, formed on the end of the side flap, (1 When it is desired to close the envelope the end flaps, 0 G are laid or folded inward on thereel A. The side flap, G is then folded on the end flaps. and the tongues I I inserted in the slits H of such flaps. The outer or closing flap, 0, is now folded upon the whole, and the hook F put in place, when the parts are firmly held in position.
When the invention is applied to a box the latter may be constructed with a groove, 15, as shown in Fig. 4, to receive the free edge of the reel A, and support the latter above the bottom of the box at such edge, this groove allowing the edge of the reel to be sprung into the same without difficulty. If desired, the reel A may be supported at both edges by means of a groove similar to the groove 2.
The envelope shown in Fig. 7 forms the subject-matter of a separate application for a patent, and I have not therefore given a detailed description thereof herein.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a show-box for lace or other similar goods, the combination of the base orsupport with a reel composed of substantially a rectangular frame or card detachably hinged or pivoted to said base or support at one edge, essentially as described, whereby said reel may be readily removed and replaced, for the purposes set forth.
2. A show-box for lace, embroidery, or other like goods, consisting of a reel, hinged thereto at one edge, and a swinging leaf, connected to the closing flap of the em'elope or box and serving to lift or swing the reel partially out of the latter when it is opened, substantially as described.
3. A show-box for lace, embroidery,or other like goods, consisting of a reel and a box havin g the reel hinged thereto orsupported thereon at one edge and constructed with a groove to support the free edge of the reel, substantially as shown and described. 7
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
