UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY CLAY BURKHEAD, OF SUMMIT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO M. S. VAN METER, OF MEETING CREEK, KENTUCKY.
CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,101, dated September 20, 1892. Application filed May 31, 1892- $erial No. 434,985- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY CLAY BURK- HEAD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Summit, in the county of Har din and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in packing-boxes or crates.
The object of the invention is to provide a crate which is simple in construction and is provided with means for holding the lid or cover to the body portion of the receptacle; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crate-or packing-box constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
A designates the body portion of the box or crate, which is made up of side and end pieces, to which a bottom is secured, a central partition (t being located within the same. Each end piece is provided on the outside near its upper edge with a transverse batten B, said batten being cut away centrally, as shown at b, to receive the upper end of a spring-catch C. This spring-catch is preferably made of a single piece of spring-wire bent to form a transverse portion 0 and hook or catch portions 0 c, the side members of said catch diverging slightly and being attached to near the lower edge of the end piece and retained in place by a suitable loop or staple d.
To the upper edge of the partition a is secured a strip e, which is wider than the partition and its edges beveled to meet the same.
1) designates a removable top, which is made up of two similarly-shaped sections, which are hinged to each other, each section carrying a strip f near its hinged end and near the opposite end a strip the strip f being beveled on one edge to bear against the beveled edge of the strip 6, while the strip 9 is slightly beveled to bearagainst the end of the receptacle. Each section of the top projects beyond the end of the receptacle and is provided at this overlapping end with a transverse strip h, which is cut away centrally, as shown at h, across which extends a bar h with which the hook portions of the spring-catch will engage when the top or cover is closed, the center portion of the cover being held rigid by the strips f bearing against the beveled strip 6.
The cross-bar If, in addition to forming a bar for engagement with the catch 0, is bent up and passed through the strip h and cover, so as to assist in securing these parts together.
A crate or packing-box thus constructed may be used for shipping berries, eggs, or other such articles, and may be made open to provide ventilation.
It will be noted that the transverse bars f and g also prevent transverse and longitudinal movement of the cover by bearing againstthe side and end pieces and that the catch 0, being located within the battens B and h, will be protected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a packing box or receptacle A, having at each end a spring-catch constructed substantially as shown, of a central partition having a beveled strip secured to its upper edge and a top or cover made up of two sections hinged together and provided with transverse strips f f, beveled to lock with the beveled strip at the upper end of the partition when the cover is closed, and with end strips having cross-bars with which the springcatches carried by the receptacle engage, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
h HENRY CLAY BURKHEAD.
