HINGE.
I SPEGIFIGATIN, forming part @f Letters Patent NO. 677,984, dated July 9, 1901.
Application filed February 25, 1901. Serial No. 48,866. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. HERBST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Use in Hanging Shutters and Doors, of which the following is a specification,.such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective device for use in hanging Window-shutters anddoors; and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which* Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the use or application of my improvement; Fig. 2, a plan view of a blank on which the device which I employ is made; Fig. 3, a side view of said device; Fig. 4, a back view thereof,
and Fig. 5 a front view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class specified, which comprises a sleeve 7, open at one side, as shown at 8, and preferably composed of sheet metal, and the lower end of which is preferably cutaway at an inclination, as shown at 9, and the edges.
of which are folded, as shown at 10, so as to give strength thereto and prevent injury to the hand or hands in handling the same. The
upper end of the sleeve 7 is provided with a plurality of arms 11, separated by spaces 12, and in practice three of the arms 11 are preferably employed, and consequently three of the spaces 12, and thel upper ends of the arms 11 are curved outwardly, as shown at 13.
I have also shown at itin Fig. 1 a part of a Window-frame and at 15 a window-shutter, and the window-frame is provided with one part 16 of the usual shutter-hinges, and the shutter is provided with the other part 17 of said hinges. The part 16 of the shutter-hinges is provided with the usual pintle 18, and the part 17 is provided with the usual knuckle 19, and in practice my attachment is connectbetweensaid arms, and in placing the shutter in position it is grasped by the hands, as shown in Fig.`1, and gradually lowered and guided, so that the pintle'of the upper hinge enters the lower end of said sleeve, as indicated in ses the drawings, and at this time the lower pintle is adapted to enter its corresponding knuckle,and the attachment serves as a guide for connecting the parts of the upper hinge;
while the lower end of the shutter is heldin proper position and the shutter lowered, so that each of the pintles will pass into its corresponding knuckle, as will be readily understood.
The attachment or sleeve may be made in any desired manner; butin practice I prefer to make it from a blank of sheet metal. (Shown in Fig. 2.) This blank consists of a headpiece 20, from which the sleeve 7 is formed, and three projecting parallel members 21, which are folded to form the arms 11, as shown in Figs.` 3, 4, and 5, and .in practice I also preferably form in each of the members 21 of lthe blank and centrally thereof a slot 22,
whereby the ends of the arms 11 when formed segmental or circular shape. In this opera tion of folding the members 21 of the blank to form the arms 11 the ends of said members extend below the upper end of the sleeve 1l and are held in place by catchers 23, and the ends of said arms may be soldered in position or may be secured in any desired manner.
My invention, however, is not limited to the details of the construction of the attachment, and the entire device may be east, if desired, the only object being to provide an attachment of the form shown and described which will operate in the manner speciiied.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1 A device for use in hanging window-shui",L ters and doors comprising a sleeve open at one side and at both ends, said sleeve being provided at one end with projecting arms spaces, the ends of said arms being curved separated by corresponding spaces, substanoutwardly, substantially as shown and de- 1o tially as shown and described. scribed.
2. A device of the class described, compris- A Y 5 ing a sleeve open at one side and at both ends JOHN G' IIERBST and beveled at one end, the end opposite the Witnesses: beveled end being provided with Ihree pro- STEPHEN A. MARSHALL, jecting arms separated by corresponding JAMES COOK.
