SASH FASTBNBR.
APPLICATION IILBD'MAY 1a, 1911.

Inveniorn WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WESLEY ROBERTS, 0F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES WESLEY ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window operating and fastening devices, and it is an object of the invention to provide means whereby an upper window sash may be raised or lowered without the necessity of moving the lower sash.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a window sash operating mechanism which affords means for moving the upper sash to desired points and also affords means for locking the sashes in their closed positions.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a window mechanism showing a part of a lower and an upper sash, and illustrating the mounting of the adjusting means forming the subject matter of the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a portion of a window operating and locking mechanism, the locking part thereof being shown in locked position.
The features of the invention will now be more particularly described reference being had to the said drawing in which 1 indicates an operating bar which is adapted to be secured to the sash of a window to be operated. The mechanism is particularly useful in connection with the opening or closing or otherwise adjusting of the upper sash as 2 of the usual window opening. It is difficult generally to obtain a snitable hold upon the upper sash of a window so as to be able to raise or lower the same and the lower sash as 3 generally has to be lifted and the hand put outside the window in order to reach and move the upper sash. The present device is adapted to provide a simple and effective means for accomplishing this purpose. The said rod 1 is made approximately the length of the upper sash 2 and is secured to pivoted pieces 4 and 5 at the lower and upper ends thereof as shown in Fig. 1. The upper piece 5 is pivoted only near one end at 6 to the framing of the up er sash. The lower member 4 is pivoted at T to the lower framing of the sash, the

structure being such that the rod 1 and the two pivoted pieces 4 and 5 operate or swing above their pivot points as a single'frame. By taking hold of the rod 1 the upper sash can be raised or lowered with great facility, it only being necessary to reach the hand over the upper edge of the lower sash 3.
The pivot bars 4 and 5 may be swung outwardly to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 when the window sashes are closed, the projection 4 thus operating as a lock against the movement of either sash with respect to the other. A locking means for holding the parts in this position is preferably mounted upon the pivot points 4 and usually consists of a spring pressed bolt 8 arranged in a casing 9 formed upon said pivot points 4, the lower end of the bolt 10 being adapted to engage a recess formed in the framing of the sash 2.
The recess engaged by the bolt 8 is so arranged that the pivot points 4 could not be drawn to one side from a point outside the window by the insertion of a knife or other thin blade. When the sash 2 is to be adjusted the bolt 8 is lifted out of the socket in the lower sash frame and the parts are moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and the rod 1 is then in position for moving the upper sash to any desired height.
The device is readily applicable to all kinds of sashes but is especially adapted for affording means for reaching and operating the upper sash of the ordinary window.
What I claim is:
1. A window sash operating device, comprising a bar having lateral end portions pivotally connected with the end portions of said window sash by which it may be raised or lowered.
2. A window sash operating, and fastening mechanism, comprising a bar having end portions pivotally secured to the upper and lower rails of a window sash, and means for holding said bar in position to lock the window sash against movement.
3. A combined window sash operating device and lock, comprising a hand bar extending approximately the length of the window sash and having arms projecting therefrom, means for pivotally securing the arms in position upon the upper and lower rails of a window sash, the said mechanism when turned in one position affording a lock for the window sashes and when turned in Window sash against movement, and a bolt carried by the mechanism for holding the bar in WlIlClOW locking position.
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 9th l day of May, 1911.

another position affording an elongated hand bar for moving the sash up and down.
4. A Window sash operating mechanism, comprising a hand bar extending longitudinally and approximately for the length of the Window sash, and having end supports movable upon said Window, said bar being capable of movement into or out of the path of another Window sash, the bar When out of operating position serving to lock the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.
