LEGQFIOUNTING- FOR UPTILTING BEES.
sass-es.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented @ot. 1i, isle.
Application filed Gctober 28, 1909. Serial Ito. 525,184.
To all whom it may concern: I
lie it known that l, NA'IHAN C. l/lnnnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented ,a certain new and useful Improvement in Leg-Mountings for Uptilting-Beds, of-which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to up tilting beds commonly called foldingbeds and primarily to those mounted upon pivotal doors for swinging the bed from a room into a closet or other recess'adapted to conceal the bed during the day or when otherwise not in use. [The object of the invention is to prevent the leg from breaking when the bed is in usable or working position in the room due to the necessary lateral or side thrust of a bed mounted on a door centrally pivoted.
, Theinvention consists in a keeper or retaining device whichis engaged by the leg of the'b'ed'as it swings down tovertical or usable pbsitiomsaid keeper being so located that-it takes up side strain upon the bed leg and thereby prevents the leg being snapped oil at the pivot.-
'The invention also consists in other details oil-construction as .will be more fully described and claimed as the specification procoeds.
Referring to the drawings, F'gure 1 is direct view of a door panelhaving a folding bed. attached thereto, the bed being in Fig. 2' is a detoil View. of a corner adjacent to the foot of the bed showing the position which the parts assume when the bed is in an up tilted position. Fig. 3 is a view of the same parts when the bed is lowered and is supported by the leg in usable position. Fig. 1 is a tail plan view taken on the line M, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional side view of the pivotal connection for the leg upon the bed. i to the drawings, the numerals 8 indicate the do r. frame in which.
the door proper 10 is mounted upon vertical pivots12 and 14: so as to swing thereon at least 180 degrees. (in the front of this door 16 is mounted the folding bed 15 of any desired construction pivoted upon pivots not shown in detail, adjacent to the door and 2 ing adapted to swing up against the door and be rotated by the door through the door openinto the room not seen behind the door panel 19. As is well known the art, than from the pivot of th bed is provided with pivotal mountings 16'- carrying on each side of the bed depending supporting legs 18 attached near the foot board 20 and side rail 22 of the bed adapted,
in the position of Fig. 2, to hang as shownparallel to theside rail and out of the Way,
and adapted when the same parts have been described. are used and the parts are swung to the position of Fig. 3, as just described, and then the bed is given even a slight rotary motion upon the pivots 12 the result is very frequently the snappng off of the legs 18 at or near the pivot 16 or the breaking of the pivots themselves. In order to avoid this difficulty a clip or keeper 2e is provided adjacent toeach leg 18 when it is'in the position of Fig. 3 which engages thatleg in such a way as to do away in a large measure, if not completely, with the side strain upon the pivot 16. The shape of the leg and keeper is such that when the leg is perpendicular in usable position, the leg is held firm, with no side motion, and as the weight of the bed-comes upon the leg, the pivot 16 slides down in the slotted hole 26 in the leg, which forces the upper or tapering end 28 of the lo into a corresponding taper 80 on the head 32, which binds the leg so it is perfectly rigid in every direction, and cannot be turned until the bed is raised, when the weight of the leg causes it to drop into a loose position.
Having thus described myinvention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a panel swinging in a vertical plane, a bed hinged thereto, a leg when in usable position,
the bed is in usable position, at a distance leg, adapted to have the leg pass between itand the frame of the bed and in substantial contact with both for the purposes set forth. I
3. In combination, a swinging panel, a bed 5- hinged thereto, a leg pivoted to the bed near the foot thereof, the pivot of said connection traveling in a slot in the adjacent member perpendicular to the bed, means in said pivot and slot connection adapted to auto- 10 matically lock the bed and leg in contact with each other when the bed is in lowered position, and a keeper adapted to engage the leg when the bed is lowered to 'brace the same against the strain caused by swinging movement of the panel.
In witness whereof, I- have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
