Description

April 19, 1949. SHIRK LOCK HINGE FOR CLOSURES Filed March 14,. 1947 I m'eutm' LEROY SH/RK A tic mew Patented Apr. 19, 1949 UNITED" STATES PATENT EICE- LOCK HINGE FOR' OIIOSURES Leroy; Shirk, Kenton, Ohio Application March 14, 1947; SerialNo; 734,732
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to a lock hinge for doors and other moveable elements and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally, the invention comprises an apparatus which may be utilized in association with the hinges of a door or the like and including a plate attachable to the jamb of a door and having a pintle mounted thereon and surrounding which is a spring normally tending to keep the door in a closed position and a plate adapted to be mounted upon the door or other moveable element and having latching means for an arm associated with the springs whereby the door may be locked in open position and a trigger mechanism for releasing the locking means.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a mechanism having means for normally holding a door or other moveable element in closed position.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a mechanism having means whereby a door or other moveable element may be automatically locked in open position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby a door or other moveable element may be automatically locked in open position and manually released from such position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a mechanism such as above described which will be simple in construction, easy and inexpensive to manufacture and which may be easily attached to doors and other closures now extant.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of an embodiment of the invention shown in operable position upon a door,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the device illustrated in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a plan View of the device illustrated in Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along line 4-4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a View similar to that shown in Figure 3 but with the door in locked open position, and
Figure 6 is a sectional view of Figure 5. Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a jamb plate In provided with screws I I for attaching the same to the lamb 2 I2 of a door I3 which is provided with the customary hinges I4 for connecting the same to said j'amb. The jamb plate is provided with ears I5 for the reception of a pintle It. A coil spring I l is wound around the pintle I6 and is provided with a centrally disposed dog Ila adapted to bear against the plate I0 and a pair of feet I8 adapted to encircle and bear against a latch member I9 which is pivotally mounted upon the pintle I6 and provided with a squared end portion 20 mounted upon the door I3 is a box-like structure 2| provided with ears 22 having provision for the reception of screws 23 for attachment to the door. The structure 2| is provided with an elongated groove 24 in either side thereof for the reception of the squared end 20 of the latch member I9. A notch 25 communicates with each of the grooves 24. A releasing lever 26 having outwardly extending arm 21 is hingedly mounted in the structure 2| as shown at 28. A lever actuator 29 is pivotally mounted in one end of the structure 2| and is provided with a loop 30 for the reception of a cord (not shown) or the like and an operating finger 3| adapted to bear against the arm 21.
In operation, it will be seen that when the door I3 is in closed position, as indicated in Figures 1 and 3, the spring I! will tend to hold the latch member I9 against the structure 2| and hence tend to hold the door in closed position. Upon manually opening the door I3 to the position, for example, shown in Figure 5 the squared end 20 of the latch member I9 will be forced into the notches 25 thereupon locking the door in that position. Upon moving the lever actuator 29 by means of applying force to the looped end 30 the arm 3| will cause the releasing lever 26 to bear against the latch member I9 causing the same to be released from the notches 25 into the grooves 24, whereupon the spring I! will again return the door to closed position.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An attachment for doors comprising a plate adapted to be attached to a door jamb, a pintle carried by the plate, a housing adapted to be attached to a door and having a pair of notched slots formed therein, a latch member slidably mounted in said slots and pivoted upon the pintle, a spring mounted upon the pintle and adapted to urge the latch member against the door to normally hold the same in closed position and to hold the latch member in the notches when the door is in open position and manually operable means for releasing the latch members from the notches, said means comprising a releasing lever pivotally mounted upon the housing and a trigger likewise mounted upon the housing and adapted to actuate the releasing lever. i
2. An attachment for doors comprising a housing adapted to be attached to a door and having a pair of notched slots formed therein, a latch member slidably mounted in said slots and adapted to be pivoted to the door jam, a spring bearing on the door jamb for urging the latch member toward the door to normally hold the door in a closed position and to hold the latch member in engagement with the notches when the door is in an open position, a release lever pivoted on the housing and bearing against portions of the latch member, and a manually actuated member pivoted on the housing for actuating the release lever to disengage the latch member from the notches.
