4 Claims." (crew- 271) l This invention relates to door holders or securers of the type adapted to hold a door in an open position.
An object of the invention is to provide a de- 5 vice that will hold a door in various open positions and prevent the door from accidentally swinging closed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device that will automatically engage the door when it is swung open to prevent it accidentally closing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a releasing member to release said door to allow it to close or to hold said latching device inoperative if desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a device with means by which the door can automatically swing to a further open position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent from the description and drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a door with the invention applied thereto and with the door frame shown fragmentary,
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1, showing the door held in an open position,
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View in elevation on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a top plan View of the device on the line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View in elevation on the line 55 of Figure 1,
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5, on the line 65 of Figure 2, and
Figure 7 is a detailed view of a modified form of notched plate.
Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts in the different views, I0
is an ordinary swinging door mounted by hinges l2 upon a door frame ll, and having a door knob l3 of any common construction mounted therein.
The latching mechanism comp-rises a plate I 4 secured laterally of the door ill by means of driven fastenings H5. The plate I4 is spaced from door I B except the ends which are offset inwardly to bear against the door I!) and receive the fastenings l5. Plate M is provided with a plurality of notches IS in its upper edge, although the plate as shown has only two notches it is to be understood that any desired number could be used.
A latch I! having one end bent to form a loop E8 to engage an eye screw l9 mounted in frame H, is pivotally connected by means of loop I8 and eye screw I?! to frame II. The free end of latch i1 is turned inwardly at 20 to ride upon the upper edge of plate l4 and engage notches l5. The end then extends downwardly at 2| be- I tween plate l4 and door In and outwardly at 22 under the lower edge of plate l4. Thus latch l1 5 is held in position upon plate I4 so that it can slide back and forth upon the plate as the door is opened and closed.
A releasing member 23 is mounted upon door Ill beneath plate M by means of brackets 24. 10 One end of said member 23 is bent as shown at 25 to form a handle, it being understood that any form of handle could be used instead of the spiral loop shown. Handle 25 is positioned conveniently beneath the door knob I3 where it can 15 be easily reached. Member 23 is ofiset outwardly at 26 to form a lever, the purpose of which will be hereafter explained. The end of member 23 is bent downwardly at 27 to form a stop against door l0 so that handle 25 will always remain in 20 a slightly raised position from which it can be easily grasped.
The member 23 is loosely mounted in the brackets 24 so that handle 25 can be swung upwardly rocking the lever 26 upwardly. End 22 25 of latch I! will engage lever 26 when portion 20 is resting in one of the notches [6. Thus when handle 25 is lifted upwardly lever 26 will swing up lifting end 22 and releasing latch H from engagement with notch I6. 30
In Figure '7 a plate I4 is shown similar to plate l4 and having notches l6 and IS" in its upper edge. The notches l6" are provided with a rounded corner on one of their sides, only one such notch being shown in Figure '7, so that the 35 door can automatically swing outwardly from one of the intermediate notches l6" to the next notch 16.
In operation when the door is swung open the portion 20 of latch I! will slide along the upper 40 edge of plate I4 until portion 20 reaches one of the notches [6 into which it will drop, or if notches l6 are being employed the momentum may be sufficient to cause portion 20 to ride up over the round portion and onto the next notch I6" or [6, it being understood that any number of notches l6 may be used. If notches [6 are being employed the handle 25 may be lifted toallow door ID to swing to a full open position, 50 Where it is desired to close the door In handle 25 is lifted rocking lever 26 upward lifting end 22 and raising portion 20 out of engagement with notch l6, IE, or IE" so that the door can be swung closed. The handle 25 being held raised 55 so that end 22 will slide upon lever 26 preventing portion 20 engaging any of the notches.
It is to be understood that only the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, the right being reserved to make such changes and modifications as will not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:-
1. A door securer, comprising a notched plate end of said latch member to release it from said notches.
3. A door holder of the class described, comprising a notched plate, a latch bar adapted to slide upon the upper edge of said plate and engage said notches, a releasing member having an oifset portion forming a lever, said ofiset portion engaging the free end of said latch bar and adapted when operated to lift said latch bar out of engagement with said notches.
4. A door holder comprising a notched plate, a strand of wire forming a latch bar and adapted to engage the notches in said plate, a releasing member formed of a. strand of wire and arranged beneath said plate, said member being rotatably mounted and provided with an offset portion forming a lever and a looped end forming an operating handle.
JOHN HARRISON.
