Description

E. E. MAEK. AUTOMATIC wmno'w FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 30,1917.
Patented 0011.9.1911.
Witnesses Atiorneys r re I ELMER nnswon'rn MACK, or FORT soo'rr, KANSAS.
AUTOMATIC wrnnow-rnsrrnnnn.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMEP. E. MAoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Scott, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Automatic lVindow-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is a window lock designed to automatically look a win dow sash against movement, and the objects of the invention are, first to provide a latch which will automatically lock the upper and lower sash, second, to provide a latch on one sash adapted to cooperate with catches on the other sash and on the window stop, third, to provide a simple and eflicient window latch.
With. the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical is shown in wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of the de vice showing the same attached to a win dow, a fragmentary portion of which is shown.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the latch, the casing being in section.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one catch.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the other catch.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference:
The ordinary window frame is shown at 1 on which is mounted the usual window stop 2 which with the spacing or dividing strip 3 forms a channel in which the lower sash 4; may slide. The upper sash 5 is slidably mounted in the frame in the usual way, and is retained in place therein by the strip 8.
Secured on the end of the upper cross piece of the lower sash is a latch comprisin a casing 6 within which reciprocates a block or plate 7 which is formed with extending arms 8 at diagonally opposed corners. The
embodiment of the invention the accompanying drawings,
Specification of Letters Patent.
arms 8 extend through openings 9 formed in the casing 6.
A stem 10 projects from one end of the plate 7 and passes through a suitable aperture formed in the end of the casing 6. A coiled spring 11 surrounds the stem and yieldably retains the plate 7 in its normal or forward position. A headed pin 12 rises from the plate 7, to which it is fastened in any suitable manner, and extends through a slot 13 formed in the casing 6. This pin acts as a thumb piece or finger grip by which the plate 7 may be reciprocated.
A wedge shaped block 14 is provided on one edge with spurs 15, and the block has a suitable aperture 16 for the reception of a nail or screw by which it may be secured to the stop 2, the spurs being positioned to enter the stop and prevent the block from turning on the nail or screw. This block forms a catch for one of the arms 8 of the latch.
Another wedge shaped block 17 is provided on one side or face with the spurs l8, and has an aperture 19 extending transversely thereof for the reception of a nail or screw by which the block is fastened to the face of a side bar of the upper sash 5. The spurs 18 act as an anchor for the block to prevent its pivoting on the nail or screw.
In practice the device operates as follows: The latch is secured to the lower sash by screws or otherwise, and the catches secured in place on the sash stop and the upper sash. It will be understood that the catches may be spaced at intervals along the stop and upper sash if desired. When both sashes are closed, as shown in Fig. l, the arms 8 of the latch lie under the catches or blocks 14 and 17 and prevent one opening the window without first releasing the latch.
The latch may be released by pressing outwardly on the pin 12 and forcing the plate 7 outwardly which will draw the arms 8 from under the blocks or catches. Either sash may then be moved to any desired position and, should other catches be provided, may be locked in any selected position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is:
