APPLICATION FILED MAY 22 |914- 1, 181,518, Patented May 2, 1916.
GILBERT G. GHORMIJEY, 0F EDVAB-DSVILLE, KANSAS.
WINDOW-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
Application led May 22, 1914. Serial No. 840,312.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GILBERT G. Gnomi- Lnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edwardsville, in the county of `Wyan dotte and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vindow- Fasteners, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for windows.
In carrying out my invention I propose to Provide a simple and effective lock which may be attached to the upper sash of a window and which will automatically engage with the meeting bar of the lower sash to lock both of the sashes. I also propose to provide a device of this character which may be readily attached to either the side stiles of the upper sash or to the mullion of said upper sash adapted to automatically move into locking position with the lower sash when the sashes are closed upon the frame, and further whereby the locking member will not necessarily interfere with the operation of the sashes.
A further object of the. invention is to provide an automatic window fastener or lock which cannot be surreptitiously tampered with or operated from the exterior of the window.
It is a still further object of my invention to provide means for automatically locking two sashes when the same are closed which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity in construction, cheapness in manufacture, and accuracy in operation.
The essential features of the invention involved in carrying out the Objects above indicated are necessarily susceptible of embodiment in various forms of construction without departing from the scope of the invention, but certain preferred and practical embodiments are exemplified by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the application of my improvement upon the sashes of a window frame, Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse sectional view taken through the meeting bars of the sashes.
It is a common failing in housekeepers to suppose that the sashes of a window are locked when the window is closed, especially so when they have not personally operated the sashes, and the present construction 0f sash fasteners is such that persons are deluded into the belief that the closed sashes of windows are really locked, and in order to determine whether or not such is the case, it is necessary that an attempt be made to open one of the sashes. In large buildings which require the service of a janitor or keeper, windows have been left unlocked and premises have been entered by unauthorized persons with perfect ease because the janitoror care-taker seeing the windows closed do not think it necessary to investigate the lock.
It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a lock which will work automatically upon the closing of the sashes of a window, so that the necessity of operating the sashes or otherwise investigating the lock will not be necessary, as a person seeing the windows closed will readily know that the sashes are effectively locked.
In carrying out my improvement I employ a fiat strip of spring metal, and bend the same upon itself, so that the outer leaf at the said bent portion will contact with the inner leaf for a desired distance and the said outer leaf is then bent outwardly at an angle from the inner leaf. The inner leaf has its end bent at a right angle, as indicated by the numeral 6, and inserted in a suitable slot in one of the stiles 2 of the upperI sash of a window and secured therein in any desired or preferred manner, as for instance, through the medium of a screw 7. The angular portion of the outer leaf of the spring member 1 projects inwardly of the lower bar 8 of the upper sash 3 and also over the upper bar 10 of the lower sash 9 and to rest on a metal plate 11 which is secured to the bar 10 through the medium of screws l2 and which has its outer edge provided with a longitudinally extending vertically disposed flange 13 that serves as a stop for holding` the outer leaf of the spring member 1 upon the said plate 11.
It will be apparent that when the outer leaf of the spring is forced toward the inner leaf, either of the sashes will be free to slide upon the window casing, and also that when the meeting bars 9 and 10 are brought together the outer leaf of the spring will automatically spring over the plate ll to hold the sashes in locked condition.
Having Athus described the invention, what I claim is:
The combination with an upper and a lower sash havinzgmeeting bars, of a fastener for the sashes, said fasteners comprisinga strap of flat spring metal bent upon itself to provide an inner and an outer leaf, the outer leaf being arranged in contacting position with the inner leaf at the bent portion of the strip and from thence extended outwardly at an angle with relation to the inner leaf to overlie the upper bar of the.
lower sash when the bars are brought together, the. inner leaf having its end pro- Vlded with a rlght angular extension which is adapted to be let in a depression in one of the stiles of the upper sash at the juncture of the lower bar with the said stile, and 15 Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
