Be it known that I, JONATHAN N osEwonTHY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of St. Johns, in the Oolony of Newfoundland, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-locks; and the object that I have in view is the provision of a compact construction adapted for application to the opposing faces of the meeting sash-rails, so as to be concealed when the sashes are closed and locked.
A further object is to provide a simple and eiicient construction for automatically locking the sashes when they are closed, and, furthermore, to provide the lock with a detachable operating' device adapted to easily release the lock when it is desired to open the sash, said device when detached preventing access to the lock, so that it cannot be released by evil-disposed persons.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the course of thesub joined description, and the actual scope thereof will be defined by the annexed claims.`
lReference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference `indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view showing a portion of the meeting-rails of windowsashes with my improved sash-lock applied thereto.. Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional elevation with the sashes in their closed positions and illustrating the application `of my improved lock. Fig. 3is a detail view in side elevation of one part of the lock. Fig'. 4 is an edge elevation of the device shown by Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the other part of the lock.
A B dcsignate'the meeting-rails of the upper and lower sashes, respectively, said sashes being' equipped with the usual lights a and adapted to slide in the gu'ideways provided bythe strips c. These parts may be of the usual or any preferred construction, and they are referred to herein for the purpose of enabling' those skilled in the art to secure a clear understanding' of my invention.

As is usual, the meeting-rails are provided with beveled faces al e, as in Fig. 2, and in the beveled face of the railA `is provided a recess 5, while the rail B has a recess 6 and a transverse horizontal slot or opening '7, the latter communicating with said recess 6.
One part ormember of the fastener is shown by Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings, the same consisting' of a metallic plate 9, having a flange 10, the latter being provided with spurs or teeth 11, which are adapted to be embedded into the upper part of the sash, yas in Fig. l. This member is furthermore provided with holes 1Q, adapted for the passage of screws or other fasteners, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig'. 2, and the plate of said member 9 is cut or slitted in two directions, as `at 13, to produce a tongue 14, the latter being bent to the inclined or curved position shown by Fig. 2, thereby forming an opening' i or socket which'is adapted for the reception of the latch on the companion member of the fastener. Said companion fastening `member is represented more clearly by Figs. 2, 3, and 4- of `the drawings, wherein it is shown as consisting of fiat metal plates 15 16, the former being larger than the latter. The plate 15 is cut and struck up to produce a doubled lip 17 at the lower edge thereof, a pair of short lips 18 at the top edge, a doubled guide 19 between said short lips 18 at the top edge, and parflil T Je parallel iianges 2O are produced by cutting the middle portion of the plate in two directions and bending the cut portions at right angles to the plane of the plate, so as to bring the flanges 2() into parallel relation and produce a slot or opening in that part of the plate from which the flanges are bent. The guide 19 is stamped at the time that the plate 15 is cut from a piece of sheet metal, and this guide extends substantially at right angles from the plate and is bent downwardly at 21, said bent part being cut out or slotted, as at 22 in Fig. 3.
The plate 16 of the latch member of the lock is cut or stamped from a piece of sheet metal, and it is slitted to produce an intermediate portion which is bent in an inclined direction to the plane of the plate and isthen lianged. The inclined part of the plate 16 produces a latch 23,

and the flange of the latch extends upwardly therefrom, as at 24 in Fig. 2. The plate 16 is applied to one side of the plate 15 in a position to be engaged by thc lips 17 18, which are bent or pressed down upon the plate 16 in a way to firmly hold the latter in position. The latch or tongue 23 of the plate 16 projects through the central slot, which is formed in the plate 15 by bending the arms or flanges 20, and the flange 24; of this latch or tongue 23 extends upwardly into the overhanging portion 19 of the guide, whereby the plate 16 and its integral parts are disposed compactly with relation to the plate 15 of the latch member. It will be seen that the latch member consists of two parts 15 16, each of which is stamped or struck up from a piece of sheet metal in a proper form for assemblage compactly to produce a member having a spring tongue or latch, said member being adapted for cooperation with the sash-rail B and with the keeper member 9.
lThe flanged end of the latch or tongue 23 is provided with a threaded opening adapted for the reception of a socket-tube 25, the latter extending into and through the slotted part 22 of the guide 19. This socket makes provision for the convenient attachment of a spindle 26, which is screwed into said socket-tube. Said spindle passes loosely through the slot 7 of the rail B, and at its projecting end it is furnished with a head 27, thus making provision for the convenient manipulation of the spindle and for attaching it to or removing it from the socket 25.
The keeper member 9 of the lock is fastened to the face b of the rail A in a position for the tongue 14 to extend into the recess 5 and for the flanged edge 10 to overlap the top face of the rail, thus allowing the spurs 11 to be embedded therein. 'Ihe latch member of the lock is fastened to the, recessed face 6 of the rail B, so that the guide 19,. the fianges 20, and the socket-tube 25 will project into the recessed parts 6 7 of said rail. The two members of the lock are applied for the spring latch or tongue 23 to have cooperative engagement with the slot or opening produced by the tongue 111 of the latch member 9, and the inclined part of this spring tongue or latch 23 is adapted to ride over the keeper member until the rails A B assume cooperative positions, whereupon the elasticity of the tongue or latch 23 will cause it to snap into interlocking engagement with the keeper member 9. l
Assuming that the parts are in the locked engagement shown by Fig. 2 and it is desired to raise the lower sash B or to lower the upper sash A, the operator pulls outwardly on the stem 26 in order to withdraw the spring latch or tongue 23 from the path of the slot in the keeper 9, whereupon the sash B can easily be raised or the sash A may be lowered. If the sash B is raised and it is desired to lock the two sashes, it is only necessary nto pull down on the sash B and bring the spring tongue or latch 23 into position to ride upon the keeper member 9, thus forcing the tongue in a backward direction until it arrives opposite to the slot or opening 13, whereupon the tongue will snap into locked engagement with the keeper. If the upper sash is lowered, the lock will automatically fasten it when it is raised to the closed position, because the spring tongue or latch 23 will ride upon the keeper until it snaps into engagement with the socket thereof.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that the lock of my invention is applied to the beveled faces of the meetingrails in a way to be concealed from view practically by the rails when the sashes are closed, and, furthermore, that the fastener is automatic in action when one or the other of the sashes is closed. The lock may be easily releasedby manipulating the stem 26, and, if desired, this stem may be unscrewed from the socket-tube 25, thus preventing unauthorized persons from manipulating the lock, thereby contributing to the security of the fastening.
Although I have shown and described my improved lock as composed of members which are stamped or struck up from sheet metal, it will be understood that I reserve the right to modify this particular construction and also to make such changes and alterations in the form, size, and proportions of the parts as will fall within the scope of the annexed claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sash-fastener consisting of a keeper member having a slot or opening, and a latch member having a slot or, opening and provided with aspring-tongue extending through the slot or opening in the latch member and projecting in an inclined direction from the plane of said member, the said spring-tongue being adapted for interlocking engagement with the keeper member.
2. A sash-fastener for the meeting-rails of sashes,consisting of a keeper member comprising a plate having an opening' or slot and adapted to be secured to an inclined face of one sash-rail, and a latch member comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the inclined face of the other sash-rail and provided with a slot or opening, and a plate held in engagement with the last-mentioned plate and having' an inclined tongue projecting through the said slot or opening and adapted to ride upon the keeper member and to snap into engagement therewith.
3. A sash-fastener consisting of a keeper member having a slot or opening and a flange extending from the upper part of the member, and a latch member having a slot or opening and an inclined spring-tongue normally extending through the slot or opening in the IOO latch member and adapted to snap into engagement with the keeper member. n
4, In a sash-fastener, a latch member consisting of a plate having a slot or opening, a superposed plate provided with a tongue which projects through the slot or opening in the first-named plate, and means for fastening the plates together.
5. In a sash-fastener, a latch member consisting ofla plate having a slot and lips at the top and bottom edges thereof, another plate fitted to the first-named plate and held in engagement therewith by the lips, said lastmentioned plate being provided with an inclined spring-'tongue which is normally eX- posed through the slot of the first plate.
6. In a sash-fastener, a fastening member consisting of a plate having a slot and a rearwardly-extending guide, another plate fastened to the first plate and provided with a tongue which is normally exposed through the slot of said first plate, and a socket-tube attached to the free end of the spring-tongue.
` 7 The combination with meeting sash-rails, of a keeper member attached to an inclined face of one rail, a latch member fastened to the inclined face fof the other rail and providedwith atongne which projects to an exposed position and is adapted for interlocking engagement with the keeper member, and a stem attached removably to said tongue of the fastener member. y
8. In a sash-fastener, a keeper member adapted to be attached to the face of one rail, a latch member adapted to be fastened to the face of the other rail, and provided with a spring-tongue fory interlocking engagement with the keeper member, a socket-tube connected with the free end of the tongue, and a stem connected with the socket-tube, as set forth. y
9. In a sash-fastener, a keeper member, a latch member provided with a spring-tongue adapted for interlocking engagement with the keeper member, the said tongue having a flanged end, a socket-tube attached to the Hanged end of the tongue, and a spindle arranged for detachable connection withthe` socket-tube and provided with a head, as set forth.
