Description

J. M. BURKERT.
SASH FASTENING DEVICE. No. 337,339. Patented M31". 9, 1333..
IIVVE/I/TOR WITNESSES.
ATTORNEY PATENT Oriana.
JOHN M. BURKEBT, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
SASH-FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,369, dated March 9,1886.
Application filed December 9, 1885. Serial No. F5197. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, .JOHN lVLBURKERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, county of Fulton, State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Faste ners, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of sashfastenings which are usually applied to the meeting-rails of window-sashes.
The invention is adapted to be used either with or without a padlock. It is very simple in construction, contains no springs, and is therefore not liable to get out of order; besides, the parts are so connected with each other and with the window-sashes that when properly fastened and locked they cannot be separated by an unauthorized person without breaking the same.
My invention will be readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, whereon Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as when unfastened. Fig. 2 is a similar view as when fastened. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view ofthe fastening with an auxiliary plate or keeper and a padlock for securing same. Figs. 4 and 5 are detailed views of parts not clearly shown in either of the above figures.
On the drawings, the letters A B designate the meeting-rails of a pair of window-sashes. The inner edge of the rail A is recessed toreceive the downweirdly-projecting wing or lug c of the back plate, D, and the ends of thesaid back plate as well as the aforesaid lug c are provided with holes for the reception of woodscrews, whereby it is designed to be secured to the meeting-rail.
lhe upper surface of the plate D is provided at or about the center thereof with a conical projection, e, having a perforation in the vertical center of same for the passage of a rivet, f, whereby the fasteninglever E is connected therewith, the said lever being provided at one of its ends with a similar perforation, the lower portion of whichis recessed to tit over the conical projection of the plate D. The rivet is inserted from the top of the lever, and its point is riveted into a countersink at the under side of the plate D.
- 'One side of the lever E is provided with a projection or hook, it, which is adapted to engage a slot, z, formed in the vertical portion is of a front plate, L, which, like the rear plate, is provided with suitable holes for the reception of a pair of fastening wood-screws, mm. To the outer or swinging end of the fastening-lever E is pivotally secured a thumbcatch, P, having a downwardly projecting portion, g, which is adapted to swing around the front end of the raised portion of the plate L and to clamp the lever E against the side of same, and thus prevent the fastening from being accidentally unloosened.
The upper part of the thumb fastening is provided with a perforation, .r, for the engage ment of a padlock, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The letterlt designates an auxiliary plate or keeper, the lower edge of which is provided with a slot, a, of sufficient width to straddle the fastening-lever E and the raised portion of the plate L, and is intended to fit immediately in rear of the thumb-catch P at'- 75 ter the latter has been made to engage the aforesaid projection of the plate L. This aux iliary plate or keeper has a perforation. w, in the upper part thereof, at sufficient height to be on a line with the perforation inthe thumbcatc..., in order that the said parts may be secured by a padlock, as shown at S in Fig. 3.
By referring to the aforesaid Fig. 3 it will be seen that the auxiliary plate or keeper is made to almost if not entirely cover the heads of the wood'screws, whereby the front plate is securedto its meeting-rail, which makes it impossibleto removesame withoutiirst unlocking the padlock. Now,as the screw in the lug ot' the rear plate is entirely hidden from view, it go is clear that the sashes cannot be moved without firstremoving the padlock from the aforesaid parts, then raising the auxiliary plate or keeper, next turning the thumb -screw, and finally swinging the lever E away from the raised portion of the plate L, so as to withdraw the side hook of the said lever from the slotted portion of the front plate.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with apivoted lever hav ing a side hook, as described, a front plate provided with a projecting flange having a perforation therein to receive the aforesaid hook, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a pivotedleverhaving aside hook and thumb-catch, as described, a front plate provided with a projecting flange having a perforation therein to receive the aforesaid hook, the latter adapted to be secured in the perforated flange by the thumbcatch, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a fastening-lever, a plate having a raised portion perforated to receive the hook thereof and an auxiliary p1 1.16 or keeper provided with a slotted portion for straddling the aforesaid parts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN M. BURKERT.
