Be it known that I, DAVID TAYLOR, a citi- Zenof the United States, residing at New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates a fastening device designed for use in conjunction withwindow sashes and doors, the device including cooperating parts which when operatively associated effectively locks the window anddoor against movement, and makes it impossible to open these parts from the outside. 7
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangements of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device showing it in use on a window.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one part of the device.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the other part of the device.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view showing the device used for looking a door closed.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of one of the parts showing the pivoted element elevated in full lines, and its normal position by dot--. ted lines.
Figure 7 is a top plan view showing how the component parts of the fastener are associated for use.
The device forming the subject matter of the present invention embodies the cooperating parts illustrated in Figures 3 and 1 and indicated respectively at A and B. The part A is preferably made up of two parallel members 10 which are spaced apart for the major portion of their length as at 11. These members being thickened adjacent their ends as at 12, at which point they are suitably connected together. The locking element 13 is pivoted midway of its ends in the space 11 between the parallel members 10, and is of a length to wholly occupy the 1923. SerialNo; 641,001.
space 11 when the locking element is ar ranged'in parallelism with the member 10, and-yet is permitted to be easily moved upon its pivot at a right angle to these members when its use is desired.
The other part B includes a base plate 14: bifurcatedat one end as at 15 to accommodate the adjacent portion 16'of the movableelement 17. The offset portion 16 is pivoted between the'separate portions of the base defined by the bifurcation above mentioned. The movable element 17 is substantially coextensive in length with the length of the base plate 14:, and is held parallel with the base when in active position by means of a resilient fastening element 18 of any suitable design. 'This element however, is pret erably pivoted upon the base 14 so that it can be swung to an out of the way position when it is desired to move the element 17 upon its pivot in a manner and for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. Carried by the element 17 and projecting from one side thereof are spaced pins 19, the pins being spaced apart a distance equal to the width of the locking element 13, which is adapted to be arranged between these pins when in use.
lVhen the device is used in conjunction with. windows, the member A is secured to the lower rail 20 of the top sash, and while this may be done in any suitable manner. the device is preferably embedded in the said rail as illustrated. The part B is secured in any suitable manner to the upper rail. 21 of the lower sash in a manner to occupy a position directly in advance of the part A when the sashes are fully closed. In order to lock the window in accordance with the present invention, it is only neces sary to swing the movable element 17 away from its base. so that when the sashes are closed. the locking element 13 can be arranged at a right angle to the respective parts A andB with a portion of this element lying transversely of the base 14 as shown in Figure 2. With the locking element thus positioned, the movable element 17 swung downwardly in parallelism with the base 14, whereupon the pins carried by this element straddle the'locking element 13 to prevent it from being moved upon its pivot casually or otherwise. The movable element 17 is held fixed with relation to the base in its active position by means of the spring clamp or fastener above referred to.
As above stated, the device also may be used for locking doors closed, in which instance the part A is carried by the door 22 and the part B secured to an appropriate part of the door casing 24. When the door is closed, the locking element 13 is adapted to be associated with the part B in the same manner as herein above described, when the device is used in conjunction with a window sash. In either instance, the movable part is effectively locked in its closed position and cannot be opened from the outside.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A door and window fastener comprising two parts one of said parts including a support, a locking element pivoted thereon and normally arranged parallel therewith, and adapted to be swung at a right angle thereto for use, the other part including a base, an element pivoted upon one end of the base and normally arranged parallel therewith and spaced therefrom to receive the locking element therebetween and said base when the parts are associated, spaced pins carried by the pivoted element of the second mentioned part to straddle the look ing element when the latter is in active position, and means for holding); the base and said pivoted element thereon fixed relatively.
2. A door and window fastener comprising two parts, one part including spaced parallel members secured together at their ends, a locking element pivoted between said members and normally arranged parallel therewith, and adapted to be arranged at a right angle thereto for use, said other part including base. a member pivoted upon one end thereof and normally arranged parallel with the base, said member being spaced from the base and adapted to receive therebetween one end of the locking element when the latter is in active position, and means for securing the base and the pivotal element thereon fixed relatively.
