COMBINED WINDOW LOCK AND SUPPORTER.
Application filed May 29, 1916. Serial No. 100,624.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL VVIDMAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined lVindow Locks and Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined window locks and supporters and my object is to provide a spring latch and pivotally mount the same upon the window frame in such manner that the sash of the window will be locked in open or closed position.
A further object is to provide means on .the sash with which the end of the latch is adapted to engage for holding the sash in open or closed position.
And a further object is to so construct the latch that it may be used in connection with a pivoted sash, a swinging sash or a sliding sash.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application.
Figure 1 is a sectional View through a window frame showing a hinged sash in open position. 7
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sash in closed and locked position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional viewthereof, as seen on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of one form of latch showing the retaining member therefor in section.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a different i form of latch and means for mounting the same.
. Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a window frame which may be of any preferred construction, and 2 indicates a sash, which, in this instance, is attached to the upper bar of the frame bymeans of a hinge 8, although it will be understood that said sash may be mounted in the frame in any suitable manner.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. e, 1917.
In order to hold the sash in open position, angle plates 4': are attached to one face of the frame of the sash, the outwardly extending angular portion of the plates 4 having a plurality of openings 5 therethrough with which is adapted to engage the hook end 6 of a latch 7, said latch being preferably formed of a rod and having an outwardly curved portion 8 and a shank 9 extending substantially at right angles to the trend of the latch, said shank extending centrally through a retaining plate'lO, the free end of the shank being upset to form a head 11 to prevent the shank from leaving the retaining plate.
The retaining plate 10 is attached in any suitable manner, as by means of screws 12, to one face wall of the frame 1, the latch from the curved portion 8 to the hook end 6 being disposed at an angle to the face of the frame so that the free end of the latch will have to be-sprung outwardly in order to engage the hook with one of the openings 5 of the angle plates, and as the latch is formed of spring metal, the tension thereof will securely hold the hookin engagement with the angle plateuntil force is applied to release the hook therefrom.
The lowermost opening in the angle plate 4 is so positioned that when the sash is closed, the hook 6 will register with said lowermost opening and by providing a registering opening 13 in the frame 1, into which the end of the hook projects when passing through the lowermost opening of the angle plate, said sash will be held in locked position until such time as the latch is moved outwardly and the hook disengaged from the openings 5 and 13.
In Fig. 5, I have shown a modified form 1 of device which is peculiarly adaptable for locking the sash when slidably mounted in the frame, the latch 18, in this instance, having bowed portions 19 and 20 at its opposite ends, the bowed portion 19 terminating in a shank 21, which shank is rotatably mounted in a bearing 22 embedded in the window frame 23, while the bowed portion 21 terminates in a hook 24 for engagement with the openings of'an angle platecarried by the sash, the bearing22 being held in its seat by means of a plate 25 attached to the face of the frame.
By this form of device, the sash may be held at any desired angle for ventilating, or
tension of the latch, said latch will be securely held in engagement with the parts carried by the sash with which it engages.
I claim 1. The combination with a window frame having a recess therein, and a sash mounted in the frame, of angle plates having openings therein carried by the sash, a latch naving spring tension rotatably mounted on the window frame, and a hook formed on the opposite end of the latch for selective engagement with said angle plate openings and adapted to engage the frame recess through one of said angle plate openings to hold the sash in closed position.
2. The combination with a window frame having a recess therein, and a sash movably connected thereto, of a latch having a shank Copies of this patent ma.y be obtained for at one end and a hook at the opposite end, a retaining plate through which said shank extends, a bearing arranged on the shank end of the latch, means to attach said plate to the frame over the recess to retain the bearing in the said recess, and a plate carried by the sash having openings to selectively receive said hook, the hook being held in the openings by the spring tension of the latch.
In testimony whereof I have signei my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL WIDMAYER.
