To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. PELAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash or Vindow Locks, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to a lock for locking and securing window sashes; and the object of the invention is to provide a lock for fastening window sashes whereby both sashes of a window may be securely locked in any desired position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a locking device which will Ybe simple inv construction, and efficient in operation.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by means of the lock illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary detail view of a window frame and sashes, showing the lock in operative position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 except that the locking device stands in an open position, leaving the sashes free and movable. F ig.` 3 is an enlarged detail view in cross-section. Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail sectional view of the handle and pawl. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamping arm by which the sashes are held in locked position.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents the window frame, l1 the lower sash, and 12 the upper sash, of usual construction. The window lock is preferably mounted upon the upper surface of the cross or meeting rail of the lower sash 11. The window lock consists of a base plate l5 which is secured to the cross rail of the sash 11 by means of the screws 1G. As shown in Fig. 3, the base plate 15 is provided with a spindle or gudgeen 17, the upper end of which is reduced in diameter to form the shoulder 18. Mounted upon the spindle 17 is the movable arm 20, the said arm being provided with an opening 21 formed to lit the exterior surface of the spindle 17. Consequently, the opening 2l is offset and forms a shoulder 22, the said shoulder 22 being removed a distance from the faces of the arm so as to stand above the shoulder 18 to provide a chamber 23. Wound around the upper end of the spindle 17 and resting upon the shoulder 18 is the coiled spring 24, one end of said spring engaging the shoulder 18 on the base plate 15, and the other end of said spring lengaging the arm 20. The tendency of the vper sash 12, when desired. The lever 33 is provided with a square opening which corresponds to and engages with the square boss 30 upon the arm 20. When it is desired to lock both sashes, the lever 33 is raised so as to disengage it from the square boss 30, bringing the square opening in the lever around the sleeve 31, at which point the lever 33 is moved into a right angle position to that occupied in Fig. 2, as shown by the dotted position in said ligure, at which time the 'lever is depressed until the square opening therein engages the square boss 30. When the two are engaged the lever 33 is then moved until it occupies the position shown in the full lines in Fig. 2. With this movement of the lever 33 the arm 2O is moved into the position shown in Fig. 1, thereby pressing the upper sash tightly against the window frame, in the direction shown by the arrow along the side of said sash, while the lower sash is forced in the opposite direction and against the opposite side of the widnow frame, as shown by means of the arrow along said sash. It will be seen that in forcing the sashes against the opposite sides of the window frame suflicient bearing is secured along the entire length of the sashes to prevent them from being either raised or lowered, after the lock has been firmly set. The end of the vspindle 17 is provided with the cap 51 to prevent the lever 33 from being entirely removed. When it is desired to loosen the arm 20, the lever 33 is merely elevated to remove it from the boss 30, the arm thus freed is returned to its normal position under the tension of the spring 24.
As window sashes are ofttimes beveled on their inner portions next to the glass, I provide an adjustable foot-member 35 which is pivotally secured to the outer end of the arm 20. This foot-member will adjust itself to irregular surfaces when the pressure is applied, and to prevent the marring of the Wood-Work, the surface of the foot-member 35 may be covered with rubber, felt or other suitable material 50. -v
To hold the operating lever 33 down when theloclrr is set, I provide the guide member 37 which is formed integrally With the base plate 15, and underneath of which said lever moves. Y Y
To prevent tampering with the lock, by inserting a stick over the top of the upper sash from the outside, I provide a pavvl 38 (see Fig. 11) which is secured to the lovver and free end of the lever 33. The paWl 38 is controlled by means of a spring 39, and the free end of the paWl makes engagement With the ratchet teeth 40 cutinto the outer end of the base plate 15. The pavvl 38 cannot be reached from the top, but When it is desired to unlock the sashes from the inside the lever 33 is pressed slightly forward to loosen the pawl 38, at which time the end of the linger may be moved under said lever to unlatch and open said pawl, thereby permitting` the lever 33 to be swung outward into the position shown by means of a dotted line in Fig. 2.
It Will be observed, from the foregoing description, that I have provided a simple, neat, strong and efficient lock for locking Windowfsashes in any position desired.
