The object of my invention is to provide a novel roller latch to operate quietly and effectively and will eliminate the scraping of the latch which occurs with the bevel latches now in general use. I attain these and other objects of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a latch, a portion of the latch socket being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is an end View of the latch;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the socket member;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the latch;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of the latch with the modified latch socket shown in vertical section;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention illustrating a roller latch applied to a door;
. Fig. 7 is a top plan View of the roller latch with the latch socket shown in section;
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the roller latch shown in Fig. 7;
Fig. 9 is a face view of the socket member of the roller latch; and
Fig. 10 is a front elevation of the latch -member and adjacent parts of the door.
Like numerals indicate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a rubber ball l, rotatably mounted on an axle 2, which is mounted in a bracket 3, which is integral with a base 4, that is fastened to the door 6, by screws 5. I provide a latch frame or base 1, having an integral socket adapted to receive the rubber ball I. The sides 9 of the socket element 8, are beveled as shown in Fig. 1 and the base 'I is fastened to the door frame by screws IB.
Referring to Fig. 5, there is illustrated a modified latch socket I2 having an integral base II, which is fastened to the door frame. The socket member I2 has a curved or beveled lip I3 for the rubber ball to roll over. Base II is fastened to the door frame by screws I4.
In use the resilient ball latch rides over the f Referring to the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 6-10, I provide a roller latch I5 mounted on the axle I6, which in turn is I'I extending from the bracket base I8. Bracket base I8 has a stem IS,
on which is mounted a spring 20, tending to press the roller latch outwardly. Bracket base I8 is slidably mounted in a guide or socket 22 provided in a housing 2I mounted in the edge of the door. Roller latch I5 normally seats in the socket 24 of the door latch member 23.
In operation the roller I5, carried by bracket Il, and base I8, is resiliently pressed outwardly by the spring 20 and will ride into a seat in the roller socket '24 to securely hold the door in latched position.
What I claim is:
l. A roller latch comprising a rigidly mounted bracket having laterally spaced outwardly extending arms, a roller element formed of elastic material and rotatably mounted between said arms, said roller being tapered outwardly to provide a relatively narrow resiliently compressible peripheral portion, and a latch socket having a recess shaped complementary to the peripheral portion of said roller, and a beveled portion extending from the edge of said recess and adapted to progressively compress said peripheral portion as the roller approaches said socket.
2. A roller latch comprising a rigid bracket having laterally spaced outwardly extending arms, a spherical roller formed of elastic rubbery material and rotatably mounted on a rigid axle extending diametrically therethrough, said axle being mounted between the ends of said arms, a latch socket operatively mounted for engaging said roller latch and provided with a complementary segmental spherical shaped recess for engaging said spherical roller and a beveled portion extending from the edge of said recess for progressively compressing the peripheral portion of said roller as the roller approaches said socket.
3. A roller latch comprising a rigidly mounted bracket having laterally spaced outwardly extending arms, a roller element formed of elastic material and rotatably mounted between said arms, said roller being tapered outwardly to provide a relatively narrow resiliently compressible peripheral portion and a latch socket comprising a marginal flange for securing the same to a support, a raised central portion joined to said ange by inclined walls and a recess in said central portion complementary to the peripheral portion of said roller, one of said inclined walls serving to engage and progressively compress said peripheral portion as said roller approaches said socket.
