DOOR AND WINDOW STOP.
Application filed August 11, 1922. Serial No. 581,083.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS Farm, 9. citizen of the United States, and a residentof the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door and \Vindow Stops of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in door and window stops, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character, which will be highly eflicient in use.
Among the salient objects of the invention is the provision of a stop of this character primarily designed to be associated with a door, of ordinary construction, to prevent slamming thereof, but which can be associated with a window, by slight modifications, and so used as to alleviate the use of Window cords and window weights which are now in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. V
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of a door and jamb showing the invention associated therewith;

In carrying the objects of the invention into effect, and referring to the drawings, 10 indicates a door, of any approved type, hinged at 11, to one of the door jambs 12, and 13 indicates the opposite correspondin jamb which is constructed in the usua manner.
with a removable front Wall 15 provided with a rectangularly shaped opening 16 for the reception of 'a strike plate 17 hinged to the wall 15 as at 18, the free end of the stop plate 17 being bent inwardly with respect to the housing 14 and then outwardly toward the plate 17, as at 19. The purpose of bending the free end of the stop plate in this manner is to form a suitable guide which will serve to guide the strike plate inwardly toward the interior of the housing 14 when the same is caused to move in that direction. The strike plate is normally held in outward position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, through the medium of an expansion spring 20 embracing astud shaft 21 carried by the plate 17 and a stud shaft 22 carried by the rear wall 23 of the housing 14, as indicated. The expansion spring 20 is so arranged that the same can be adjusted to increase the tension thereof, this adjustment being accomplished through the medium of an adjustable nut 24 screw-threaded on the stud shaft 22, as indicated.
Associated with the door 10 is a suitable strike plate B which comprises a plate portion 25 carrying a friction pad 26 which in this instance is formed of hard rubber, the strike plate B being fixed to the door through the medium of inwardly turned tongs 27 as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The function of the construction so far disclosed is such that when the door is swung into closed position the friction pad engages the stop plate 17 which is forced inwardly toward the interior of the housing 14 and as the same moves in this direction the expansion spring 20 is compressed, forcing the plate against the friction pad 26 and the further the door swings into closedposition the tighter the engagement between the friction pad and the strike plate 17 will be. This function prevents the door from slamming against the door stop 28 of the usual construction and also prevents the door from swinging back into open position, the friction pad and the stop plate 17 being under com ression prevents this movement of the oor.
Referring now to the drawing, illustrating Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive, the construction front wall, a member having an end hi of the stop G is similar to that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, with the exception that the device is fixed to the jambs of a window in a location which will perform the best service.
Referring to the .figures, 29 indicates the lower sash of a window and 30 indicates the upper sash thereof. In associating the invention with a window there are two similar stops employed, one being located adjacent the upper sash rail of the window sash 29 as indicated at 31 and the other being located adjacent the lower sash rail of the window sash 30 as indicated at 32, both stops being mounted in the window jambs 33, as illustrated in Fi 7 and are secured thereto through the medlum of suitable screw members 34 as illustrated in Fig. 7.
The reference characters used to describe and indicate the parts of the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive illustrate and indicate the same parts in the construction illustrated'in Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive, the only difference being that mentioned above.
The function of the stops associated with a window sash is slightly different from that when associated with a door, in the present instance the strike plates 17 is adapted to work against the adjacent side of the sash rails of the window sashes when the window sashes are moved up and down. When the window sashes are in closed position the stop plates 17, rest .againstv suitable wear plates 35 imbedded in the sash rails of the window sashes, the purpose being such that the stop plates 17 will not cut or dig into the material of which the window sashes are formed.
It will be seen that by the use of a stop of the construction herein set forth, when associating the same with a window sash the use of window cords and window weights are not needed to hold the window in any desired open position and the construction is of such simple nature that the invention can be manufactured and installed at a small cost.
While I haveillustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efi'ect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be-limite'd to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A structure of the class described including a housing adapted for attachment to a door jamb and having an opening in its e to the housing at one side of the opening front wall, a member having an end hin ed,
to the housing at one side of the opening and having its opposite end bent to pass through the opening and into the housing and provided with means adapted to resist inward movement of the member, and means carried by a door adapted for engagement with the member for cushioning and checking the movement of the door.
3. A structure of the class described including a housing adapted for attachment to a door jamb and having an opening in its front wall, a member hinged to the housing at one side of the opening and having an end adapted-to pass through the opening into the housing, stud members carried by the housing and the member, a resilient member surrounding the stud members adapted to resist inward movement of the member, and means carried by a door adapted for engagement with the member for cushioning and checking the movement of the door.
4. A structure of the class described including a housing adapted for attachment to a door jamb and havmg an opening in its front wall, a member hinged to the housing at one side of the opening and having an end adapted to pass throu h the opening into the housing, stud mem ers carried by the housing and the member, a resilient member surrounding the stud members adapted to resist inward movement of the member, and a friction pad on the side edge of a door for engagement with the member, when the door is closed, adapted to cushion and check the movement of the door.
5. A structure of the class described including a housing, a stop member having one end hinged to the front wall of the housing and having the opposite end bent inwardly to project within the housing, a spring member controlling the movement of said stop member, a member projecting from the rear wall of the housing and having a portion entering the spring, and a member carried by said first named member for adjusting said spring.
