on rnn STATES PATENT orator.
FRED SCROGGINS, 0F BROWNDEL, TEXAS ASSIGNOR OF FOBTY -NINE ONE-HUNDREDTHS TO J. E. ALLISON, OF HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS.
DOOR-FASTENER,
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 31L 4 1916 Application filed February 12, 1915. Serial No. 7,696. 7
To all whom it may concern:
citizen of the United States, residing at Browndel, in the county of Jasper and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in locks. v r
The object of the invention is to provide a lock of the character described which can be readily attached to and detached from a door facing, or door and by means of which the door can be easily locked from the inside of the room, so that it will be impossible to unlock the door from the outside/ 7 A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a lock which is readily detachable and which is also light and may be easily carried about the person, and may be attached to the door facing when it is desired to lock the door and detached therefrom when not in use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of the door and facing, showingthe lock attached to the facing and locking the door closed. Fig. 2, is an edge view of the lock. Fig. 3. is a plan view thereof. Fig. 4, is a sectional view taken on the line a-a, of Fig;
2, and, Fig. 5, is a plan view of the door, as secured in closed position by the lock.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures: the numeral 1 refers to the door facing and 2, refers to the door. These parts may be of any ordinary construction.
The numeral 3, refers to the casing of the lock, which is formed of a metallic plate, presenting a U shaped form in horizontal sections. At one-side the free edge of the plate is bent at right angles to the body thereof, forming the flange 4, which rests against the edge of the door facing, aS shown in Fig. 1. and which is secured thereto bv means of barbs. as 5, thrown out from the body of the flange or bv screws, as 6, which pass through said flange and are screwed into the facing, or by both said barbs and screws. In case the lock is'placed in position only temporarily, only the barbs Wlll be necessary, as when the door is closed it will fit closely against the flange 4, and secure the lock against detachment, but when the lock is to be left in place permanently, it may be found desirable to use the screws 6. A latch 7, is provided, which is a flat metallic member, near the inner end of which is the oblong slot 8, and a pin 9, passes through said slot and has its ends secured in the respective sides of the casing. The outer end of the latch is bent outwardly forming the grip 10.
l/Vhen the door is unlocked, the latch depends in vertical position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. When it is desired to lock the door, the latch will be swung around into horizontal position against the stop 11, and then forced inwardly, sliding on the pins 9, until its inner end seats in the alined recess 12, of the casing, which serves to lock the latch in horizontal position, and the latch is of sufiicient length that, when in sald positlon, its free end will project out against the inner side of the free edge of the I varied in mechanical structure without departing from the principle of the invention,
and I hereby reserve the right to make such structural changes as may be found desirable, so long as I keep within the scope'of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A door fastener comprising a U shaped casing formed of two prongs and having a recess therein, one prong being lon er than the-other, the elongated prong being bent at a right angle to the casing and having barbs proiecting therefrom, a latch whose inner vend is provided with a slot, and whose other end is bent at a right angle thereto, a pin passing through thisslot, whose ends are fixed to said casing, saidlatch being adapted to be swung upon said pin into alinement with said recess and its inner end moved into the recess and thereby locked into fixed posi-- prongs, one of the prongs being elongated beyond the other, the extending part being bent at right angles to the casing. engaging means carried by the bent over portion, a latch, Whose inner end is provided With a slot, a bearing member passing through said slot and fixed to the casing, said latch being adapted to be swung around upon its hearing into alinement With said recess and its inner end moved into the recess and thereby locked into fixed position relative to the casing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
F. SCROGGINS.
