Description

dnited' States @anni dimite.
CHRISTIAN SHO-LL, OF MOUNT JOY, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 110,078.y dated December 13, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT.' IN SASH-LOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making partei' the same.
M rvTo all lwhom 'it may concern Be it known that I,` CHRISTIAN SHOLL, of Mount Joy, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Sash- Lock and Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Drawing.
Figure l is a plan view of Iny improved sash-lock and holder, showing the same when inortised into the casing of the window;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section7 taken-on the line z s ot' fig. 1, showing the operation, and the manner of securing the spring plate, it being thrown Yin by the sash; and
Figure 3 is a transverse section, taken on the line x x of tig. 1, all the parts being in their normal condition.
Similar letters of reference denote likeparts in each of .the ligures.
'lhis invention relates to an improved sash-lock and holder7 and is designed as an improvement upon the one for which Letters Patent were granted to me on the 15th day of June, A. D.\1869; and
It consists in securing an inner plate of a sashholder to an outer and flanged face-plate by means of' a spiral spring acting over and secured upon a headed bolt secured to its outer face-plate, as will be herein-` after more fully described and set forth in the following specification.
A is the window-casing. within which my lock and holder are secured.
B represents the upper, and Bthe lower sash, having apertures and slots at the side to register with the spring catches C O.
D represents the upper plate, which is mortised into and secured to the casing A by screws d d.
Under the plate D is a plate, E, its lower endresting upon a square flange, dl, and its -upper end having a catch, C, and thumb-button, e, by means of which button the catch G can be depressed when it is desired to raise or lower the sash B.
'lwo pieces, Z2 and (Z3, are riveted or cast upon the inner surface of' the plate D.
A spring, F, is coiled around the pin d, which is headed to prevent the spring from coming olf, and the plate E.
The spring F will hold the plate E snugly against the plate D, unlessthrown in by the sash, as shown in Iig. 2.
Gr is the lower plate, adapted for the lower sash, and is precisely like the upper plate, and operates in combination with like parts, with this difference: that the inwardly-projeeting ring surrounding the thumb-piece is onlitted,'and, instead of the thumb-button e, which necessarily must be made Hat, ornearly so, in order toallow sash Bto pass overit, ithas a projecting thumbpiece, H, which protrudes through the inner strip or beadfot' the window, in order `that -the catch may br depressed.
By iny present application the following advantages are obtained over my former patent, viz:
First.' 'The catch spring and supporting-flange being upon a line with the sash, the weight of the sash upon the catch is transmitted directly upon the supporting- 'lange,` and the parts are less liable to get out of repair.
Second. rlhe s nine'. bein" made fast noon the iin or E: L V
for bolt, keeps the spring plate in position.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The spring F, permanently secured upon -the bolt il, in combination with the plates E and D all and projecting thumb-piece H, all the parts being arranged and constructed to operate together as shown and de' scribed, and for thel purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have sinned my name to this speciication in the presenceot 'two subscribing witnesses.
CHRIST. SHOLL.'
Witnesses Jessen R. EDsoN, REUBEN HURD.
