IMPROVEMENT 4n1 ATTAGHTNG Locks To safes, vAULTs, et;
TH o MA's no LALN, .lo F ALBANY, New ironie.y Letters .Patent 59,981, dated November 27, 1866.
v 4 s PEoIFIGATIoN-i. T0 ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THoMAS DOLAN, of the city and county'ot` Albany, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Method of Attaching Locks to Fire-Proof Safes, Vaults, etc. and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of `,the same` `reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which are m'ade part of this specification,andjn which-- Figure 1 is an insidev elevation of a safe-door and door-frame, having `'the lock Iapplied according to my invention.
Figure 2 is an inside elevation of the door, as detached from the safe.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectionof the doorl andl door-frame in the plane indicated by the line F G, iig. 1.
Figure 4 isa `sectional elevation ,of the lock and the contiguous portions of the door anddoorlframe, the i,
plane of section being indicated by the'line H I, iig 3.'
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. The subject yof this invention is a novel means of constructing and applying the locking devices of safes,
vaults, and similar structures. The4 lock is located in or applied to the frame of such structure instead of being applied to the door, as heretoforepractised, and is made to operate a sliding bar, which is also applied to the` 1 door yframe, and which, when Vin one position,fshall engage with dogs or catches on the door, and thusfsecurlely hold the latter in its closed position, but which, when inanother position, shall release said dogs or catches, and
permit the door to be opened.
In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may he enabled to fully understalnl and use the same, I will proceedlto describe it Vin connection with the accompanying drawings.'
A may represent a lock secured' to the inner side of the door-frame, B, ofthe safe, vault, or other structure with which it is to be employed T his lock may be constructed with a cylindrical hub, shown at 4, whichis adapted to be partially rotatedby a key, and through lany suitable connections, such as astud at a, working in a slotted'plate, b, is made to elevate and depress a sliding andlockingihar, C. is `the-door, hung upon hinges,
F', and provided at its opposite side with dogs, or catches, D, which 'may be attachedA to the door by any suitable` means', or cast solidly Vin one piece therewith, "'Now, when the-locking bar, C, is elevated, the recesses or notches, h h, (see iig. 3,) stand in line with the dogs,'D, on the door, so that then thefdoor may be opened or closed, as
the said notches permit the dogs to pass across. the plane of the ba1', C, without being retarded. In order to lock4 the door, the bar, C, is depressed' after the door is closed, and the-notches, L, being thus thrown out of` line with 'the dogs, the shoulders of the latter become engaged with the bar` and the door is securely' locked in itsV closed position. In fig. 4 the locking har is represented as being divided in the middle, the iigure beingthereby made to illustrate the lockingand unlocking positions of the said bar, C; The locking bar is properly confined` in its operating position by the guides, 'P P, which are screwed or otherwise attached to the frame, BQ The l frame affords a more secure and stationary seat for the lock, and 'by locating `the latter therein, as described, I.
am enabled to construct a safe or vault door with greater facility, andat a less costrthanthose made upon the plans hitherto devised.
.Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
I claim a locking mechanismfor safes, vaults, etc., consisting of `a lock A, `and notched sliding bar applied to the door-frame, and dogs, or catches, D, applied Vto the door, all constructed, arranged, andoperating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
THOMAS DOLAN.
