Application filed November 29, 1924. Serial No. 752,859.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a safety attachment for looks.
One object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment for looks of safes, vaults and the like which is designed for use in connection with the usual combination lock and whereby the lock bolts may be secured against release in certain cases of attempted burglary of the safe or vault, or of mutilation of, or unauthorized interference with, the combination lock.
Another object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment of the character described which will remain inactive during the normal operation of the combination lock, and will not interfere with said operation, but which, upon displacement of the combination mechanism of the safe or vault lock, will operate to lock the bolt thereof against release.
With the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a fragmentary transverse sectional view of a safe showing the combination lock, and the safety attachment installed.

Figure 3 shows a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the safe door with the lock and safety attachment installed thereon and shown in section.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein, like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 designates the safe proper, having the usual door 2 hinged thereto.
Installed on the inside of the door is a lock mechanism, presently to be described :The numerals 3, 3 designate the bolts, or plungers, which are secured to the bolt-bar 4, and which are disposed to project into the aligned bolt holes 5, 5 in the adjacent facing of the door opening, to lock the safe door in closed position.
There is -a dead bolt 6, having a bearing in the door, whose outer end carries a suitable knob 7, bymeans-of which the dead bolt may be turned, and whose inner end has a fixed arm 8 Whose free end works in a bear ing notch 9, of the shift bar 10, attached to the bolt-bar 4.
The numeral 11 designates the usual combination lock controlling mechanism, located on the inside of the door, and which may be manipulated by means of the hand knob 12 on the outside, in combination with the graduated dial 13. The controlling mechanism 11 locks the shift bar 10, and consequently the bolts 3, 3, against release, when in one position, but when the dial has been turned to give its movements a certain order of succession the bar 10 is released to permit the lock to be unlocked, through the deadbolt 6. The shift bar 10 is operatively connected with the controlling mechanism in the usual and conventional manner.
The combination lock, above described is of conventional construction and the safety attachment, embodying the invention will now be described.
The numerals 14, 14 designate trans versely aligned bearings, attached to the inside of the door 2 and in these there is a rotatable shaft 15, one end of which has a projecting stud 16 which normally rests on the upper end of an upstanding finger 17 which is attached to the controlling mechanism 11 by screws or other suitable fasteners. The other end of the shaft 15 has a safety bolt 18 fixed thereto and, when in inactive position, projecting out at substantially right angles to the door. 'A stop 19 is fastened to the bolt-bar 4, and so located that the safety bolt 19 will drop down, by gravity, behind it, when the finger 17 is released from the stud 16. c
When a safe is burglarized, it is usually accomplished by forcibly displacing the controlling mechanism 11, so as to release the locking mechanism to permit the operation of the dead bolt 6. When the safety attachment, herein described, is used, upon displacement of said controlling mechanism 11, the safety bolt 18, will drop behind the stop 19, and 'maintain said locking mechanism in locked position.
What I claim is In a lock the combination with a lock bolt and controlling mechanism adapted to secure said bolt in locked position, or to release the same to permit operation thereof, said mechanism being subject to displacement by violence, of an inwardly projecting stop in fixed relation to said bolt, a safety bolt adapted to engage With said stop when in active position and disposed substantially horizontal sub ject to the influence of gravity when in inactive position, means adapted to hold said safety bolt in said inactive position, said means including a shaft to which the safety boltis attached, a projection on the shaft and an upstanding finger carried by the controlling mechanism and detachably engaging underneatli said projection to hold said bolt in inactive position, said bolt being subject to gravity when in inactive position and forming a Weight Which falls into said active position Whensaid projection is released by said finger. v
