TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, ANSON SEARL S, of the city of New York, have made a new and useful Improvement in Making Stump-Joints for carriage-top joints, which I call the Pivoted Stump-Joint, of which the following specifications and accompanying drawings are an exact and clear description. i
The nature of my invention consists in an improvement in the manner of making the centre-joint in carriage-prop joints with a. pivot, entirely dispensing with the old style rivet, except for ornament, and also reducing the cost and increasing the strength and durability of the same. To better describe my invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of whichi Figure 1 is a. view of the two parts of thejoints A and 13.

The journal or pivot, C on the part A fits into the socket or pivot-hole D in the part B. The pivot C is riveted at or near the point 0, thereby holding the joint firmly together for all purposes. For'the purposeof attaching an ornament to the joint, 3. hole may be drilled through the pivot, marked red, O, fig. 1, and a rivet inserted, as shown by red lines in fig. 2. The corner left in at z' is to increase the Width of the joint and strength of the parts.
This invention is intended as an improvement on the centre-joint of A. SEARLSS ndjustatble-p rep-joint, patented November 5, 1867, and is designed to housed in connection with that joint, or separated, as a stump joint.
IIitving thus described my invention, for which I desire Letters Patent- I claim an improved stump-joint, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
