Description

UNITED STATESV PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. ROBERTS, OF DORCHESTEB, ASSIGNOR TO MAURAN 85 TUOK, OF BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPaovr-:D FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 113,656, dated July 26, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. ROBERTS, of Dorchester, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowingis a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure'l is an inside elevation of one side of the bedstead; and Fig. 2, an elevation of one end of the bedstead.
Like parts are indicated by the same letters in both drawings.
rIhe nature of my invention consists in the employment of a spring latch or fastener, h, embedded in the parts A so that when the bedstead is unfolded, as in Fig. l, said fastener shall spring automatically over the top of the side pieces, B, and hold them securely in place.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, l will new proceed to describe its construction and operation.
My invention relates more particularly to folding iron bedsteads, the principal parts of which may be constructed like those in general use, A A being the posts, B B the side pieces jointed at C C to the posts and at f f to the center leg E, g the bottom slats, C the lower end pieces, and D the uppernd pieces, uniting the posts, as shown in Fig. 2, and lthe end slats.
m m are nuts screwed onto the ends of O, and n n aresimilar nuts screwed onto the ends of D, for holding the posts together, as shown in Fig. 2.
shown in Fig. 2,' over the side pieces, B,-
whereby the latter will be firmly held down against the cleats 7c. The pieces h may, however, be attached to the side pieces, B B, and
drop into the vmortises which they now occupy. The springs h being pressed in so as to be flush with the side of the posts, the latter can befolded down parallel with the side pieces, B, and the bedstead be completely folded up in the usual manner by turning on the pins f f or when the' bedstead is unfolded and the posts brought to a right angle with the side pieces, B B, the latches .h will automatically spring into the proper fastening position, as shown in Fig. 2.
My device for fastening is not only unequaled for rapidity, but it is also quite as cheap, simple, strong, durable, and efficient as any other extant for a similar purpose.
Having thus described the construction and opera-tion of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the.
spring h, secured within a recess of the post A by the rivet t', with theside piece, B, and cleats k, as set forth, and for the purpose described.
J. L. ROBERTS. Witnesses:
N. AMES, ALFRED WHITNEY.
