Description
(Mdl) W. E. CURRY. Detachable Table Leg. No 240,668.
Patented "A ril 26, I881,

OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALFTO & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
DETACHABLE TABLE-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,668, dated April 26, 1881.
Application filed November 24, 1880. (Model) To all whom at may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM EDWIN CURRY, of Gallipolis, in the county of Gallia and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Table-Legs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in table-legs, and is designed to provide means whereby table-legsmay be detachably secured to the end posts of tables by devices combining simplicity of construction and ease of operation with durability in use and elegance of appearance.
With these ends in View my invention consists in the com binatiomwith a table-post having its lower end socketed and provided with a pin or stud projecting inwardly into said socket, of a table-leg having its upper end turned to form a tenon to fit the socket of the table-post, and provided with a screw having an inclined cam-shaped head adapted to engage with the stud within the socket of the post. T
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View, in vertical section, of a table-leg joined to the post thereof in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the post. Fig. 3 is an end view of the table-leg, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view thereof.
in the drawings, let A represent the end post of a-table having its lower extremity socketed at A to receive, in close connection, the tenon B, formed at the upper end of the table-leg B. The tenon B is provided with a,
wood-screw, 0, having an inclined cam-shaped head, B the screw-threaded shank of the screw being received into the tenon, which is previously prepared to admit it by vertically boring a small hole in its upper end to avoid cracking the tenon when the screw-shank is inserted thereinto. This screw 0 is provided, asbefore described, with an inclined camshaped head adapted to engage with a pin or stud, O, inserted from the outside and projecting into the socket A of the table-post A. The cam-shaped head is provided with a slot, at, whereby the cam-shaped head is allowed to pass the pin when inserted in the socket.
Supposing, now, that the leg and post are in such adjustment that the pin is situated between the head of the screw and the end of the-tenon B, if the leg is turned to the right the upper face of the pin will be engaged with the under face of the cam-shaped screw-head, which has a rising inclination from the point I) to the point I), where it first engages with the pin orstud.
It follows from this construction of camshaped head that as the leg is turned from left to right the top E of the table-leg will be drawn into tight engagement with. the lower face, E, of the post A. When the two parts are in position it will ,be difficult to discover that the table leg and post are not of one solid piece of wood. It will also hear any strain that ordinarily falls on a table-leg, inasmuch as the tenon projects for some distance within the table-post, and thereby forms a solid joint.
Among the numerous advantages attained by the use of detachable legs constructed in accordance with my invention, it may be'mentioned that by their use tables may be packed for transportation or storage in about onefourth the space ordinarily occupied by a table with non-detachable legs, their durability in use, the elegance of their appearance, as there are no cumbrous attachments in sightso objectionable to most forms of adjustable tablelegs-and the cheapness and facility with which they may be applied to any tableeither in the process of construction or already completed. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. In a table, the combination, with a tableleg, of'a screw having an inclined cam-shaped head, the point of said screw being received in the upper end of the table-leg, a table-post socketed to admit the cam-shaped. head of the screw, and a pin projecting in to the socket of the post and adapted to engage with the inclined lower face of the head of the said screw, substantially as set forth.
2. In a table, the combination, with a tableleg having its upper end tenoned to fit a socket in the table-post, of ascrew having an inclined cam-shaped head, the point of said screw being received in the end of the table-leg tenon, atable-post sooketed to admit the tenon of the 10 table-leg, and a pin projecting inwardly into the table-post socket and adapted to engage with the inclined lower face of the said screw, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of 15 November, 1880.
WILLIAM EDWIN CURRY.
