CONENT N.' VANKIRK AND CHARLES lV. BLAY, OF JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 515,382, dated February 27, 189 i.
Application filed April 5, 1893- Serial No. 469.230. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, CONENT N. VANKIRK and CHARLES WV. BLAY, residing at Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain nevtT and useful Improvements in Chairs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,'and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.u
Our invention relates to an improvement in chairs,-tlie object of the invention being to construct a chair in such manner that it can be quickly and easily put together.
A further object is to construct a chair in such manner that it can be put together quickly and so that when the parts are assembled, the chair will be strong and present a neat appearance.
A further object is to produce a chair which will be simple in construction and durable.
lith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
'In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a side view of the chair. Fig. 2 is a front view partly in section. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the seat with a front and a rear leg and a bracket in position. Fig. '4t illus- A trates edge views of a front leg and a bracket.
Fig. 5 is a view of a modification.
Arepresents a chair bottom and is provided in its bottom in proximity to its diametrically opposite edges, with dove-tailed grooves a. Each front leg B of the chair is provided at its top with a dove-tailed projection l) adapted to enter the dove-tailed `groove a in the chair bottom or seat A.
In constructing the chair, a dove-tailed projection c on the front end of a bracket C (there being one of such brackets inserted between each pair ot front and rear legs) is inserted into a dove-tailed groove c made in the top rear side of the front legs B,-then the dove-tailed projections b at the tops of the front legs and dove-tailed projections c2 at the top of the brackets C are inserted into the rear ends of the dove-tailed grooves a in the seat or bottomA and moved forward.
Then dove-tailed projections c3 on the rear ends of the brackets C are inserted in dovetailed grooves c4 made in the front sides of the rear legs D,-When the Whole is moved forward until the front legs B reach the end of the dove-tailed grooves a terminating in proximity to the front edge of the seat or bottom A, and the rear edge of the seat or bottom A is secured in a recess e. in the rear legs D and back D', said parts being firmly held together by means of screws f.
Vhen legs are used at the rear of the chair instead of posts, the chair bottom may be provided in its under side with dovetailed grooves f in proximity to diametrically opposite sides thereof, said grooves terminating near the ends of said bottom so as not to leave openings at the front and rear thereof. Between the ends of the grooves f, enlarged sockets or recesses g are made to permit the insertion of the dove-tailed tenon or projection at the end of the legs. lVith this construction any kind of brace could be used.
A chair constructed as above described is very simple, strong, nd ornamental and will withstand great l eral or other strain, and is eiectual in evejy respect.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, an\d\desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a chair, the combination with a bottom having dove-tailed grooves in its under side, of legs having dove-tailed projections adapted to enter said grooves, brackets having dove-tailed ribs adapted to enter said grooves aud abut against said legs, and fastening devices connecting said brackets and legs, substantially as set forth.
2. In a chair, the combination with a bottom having dove-tailed grooves in its under side, of front legs having dove-tailed projections adapted to enter said grooves, brackets having dove-tailed ribs adapted to enter said grooves in the bottom of the chair, rear legs secured to said bottom, and fastening devices for securing said brackets to the rear legs, substantially as set forth.
3. In a chair, the combination with a bottom or seat having dove-tailed grooves in its under side, of legs having dove-tailed grooves, dove-tailed projections on said legs and adapt- IDO ed to enter the dove-tai1ed grooves in the seat, brackets interposed between the front and rear legs, dove-tailed tenons or projections on the upper edges of said brackets to enter the dove-tailed grooves in the seat and dovetailed tenons or projections at the ends of Said brackets adapted to enter the dovetailed grooves in the legs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof We have signed this lo specification in the presence of two subscribing wltnesses.
ooNENT N. VANKIRK. CHARLES w. BLAY.
