BURTON W. MIDDLETON, OF UNION CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNOGKD OWN CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Application filed November 18, 1907. Serial No. 401,976.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURTON WV. MIDDLE- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Chairs; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to knock-down chairs, and consists substantially of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts whereby the parts of a chair can be quickly and securely put together without bolts or screws, and as speedily detached from each other and packed into a compact bundle for storage or shipment.
The features of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth and explained and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1. is a front view in elevation of a chair embodying my improvements, with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation of the same, with parts broken away. Fig. 8 is a view in elevation of the chair, knocked down and packed into a bundle. A
In these drawings A is the chair back provided with slots a near the edges thereof having transverse pins a therein.
B is the chair seat hinged at its rear edge to the back A by means of hinges I); and the sides of the seat B is also provided near its front end with vertical slots O having transverse pins 0 therein.
D D are the sides of the chair which are provided at their rear edges with upwardly projecting hooks d d adapted to enter the slots (1 in the back A, and engage the transverse pins a therein; and on their inner faces near the front edges thereof with upwardly projecting hooks (1 adapted to enter the vertical slots C in the sides of the seat B and engage the transverse pins 0 therein.
In putting the parts of the chair together the hooks d d on the rear edges of the sides D are placed in the slots (1 in the back A and brought into engagement with the pins a in said slots; then the front edge of the seat B is slightly raised and the hooks (I entered into the said slots O near the front edge thereof and the front edge of the seat is pressed down until the hooks d engage the transverse pins 0 in said slots, thus securing all of the parts of the chair together. In taking the chair apart these operations are reversed, when the parts of the chair may be packed into a compact bundle as illustrated in Fig. 3.
I have shown and described the chair seat as hinged to the chair back, but it is obvious however that the hinges may be dispensed with and the rear of the chair seat otherwise secured in place, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
The combination in a knock-down chair, of a chair-back having hook engaging slots therein near the edges thereof, a chair-seat hinged to said chair-back having hook engaging slots in its edges near the front end thereof, detachable chair-sides, rearwardly and upwardly extending hooks in the rear edges thereof adapted to engage the slots in the chair-back, and laterally and upwardly extending hooks on the inner faces thereof adapted to engage the slots in the front edges of the chair-seat, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
BURTON W. MIDDLETON.
Witnesses:
H. J. CURTZE, FLORENCE STOOKERT.
