llNlTED STAZ'QES PATENT OFFICE.
FITZI-IUGH LEE, 0F RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
FOLDING- CHAIR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Frrzrmerr Lian, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and fState of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention comprehends improvements in articles of furniture and relates more particularly to a folding chair.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a chair of this character which may be readily folded in a compact form thereby requiring but a limited amount of space and which may be readily assembled for use.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a simple strong and durable construction in a device of this character the parts of which may be comparatively cheap in the cost to manufacture, strong and reliable when in use.
The invention also aims to generally improve this class of device rendering them commercially desirable.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction, combination formation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and particularly pointed out in the appended drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the seat; Fig. 4 is an end elevation embodying my invention when folded in a compact form, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view.
Reference now being had to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views the numeral 1 indicates the seat of the chair comprising two sections which are hingedly secured as at 2 at their adjacent edges. A plurality of projections 4 extend from the seat 1 and have formed therein threaded recesses in which are adapted to be secured the reduced threaded portions 5 of the leg 6 which provides suitable supporting means for the chair. The legs 6 are braced by means of rounds 7 which have their extremities threaded as at 7 for engagement Specification of Letters Patent.

with the recesses 7 formed in each of the legs 6 as shown.
The back rest of the chair comprises two sections 8 and 9 respectively which have ex tending laterally therefrom projections 10 and 11 adjacent each end thereof which when placed together form brace bars for the back rest of the chair. The side members of the back rest each comprise two sec tions hingedly secured together as at 12 and the lower extremities of said side members are provided with reduced tapered portions adapted to rest within recesses formed within the upper face of each section of the seat. The hinge members which connect the sections of the seat have extending there through a rod 13 having detachably mounted on each extremity thereof nuts 14- so that the rod may be readily removed and the sections taken apart when desired and a new section substituted in its place should one of the sections become worn or broken.
It is apparent from the foregoing that the portions of the chair as before described may be readily detached and assembled and folded in a compact form which will require but a small amount of space when not in use. in folding the chair the back rest is removed from the seat and each of the side members thereof are folded upon themselves and placed upon the lower face of one section of the seat as shown more clearly in F 4 of the drawings. The legs and rounds of the chair are then removed and placed in the position as also shown in Fig. l of the drawings. One of the sections of the seat is then folded upon the opposite section and the back rest and the supporting means will be held between the sections of the seat. The outer edges of the sections cfthe seat opposite to the edges to which the hinges 2 are secured are then fastened together by means of clips 15. Each of these clips comprises a strip of sheet metal having an opening formed adjacent each end thereof which is adapted to register with recess-es 15' formed within the sections of the seat so that set screws 16 may be inserted through the clips and fastened to the sections of the seat there by holding the same together which will obviously prevent the removal of the parts of the chair which are held between the sections of the seat. When the chair is in its set up form and to be used the clips 15 are then fastened to the lateral projections 10 and 11 of the back rest thereby rigidly holding the same together. These chairs are preferably made of some light material which will permit the same to be readily carried when folded in a compact form and it is apparent that the device when in a folded form will take up but a limited amount of space.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is obvious that a chair of this character will be strong and durable when in use and whereas I have shown a specific embodiment of the present invention it is of course to be understood that other minor details in changes as to form construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to that come within the scope of the present invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
hat I claim:
1. A folding chair comprising a seat and a back rest, said seat and back rest each comprising a plurality of folding sections, the sections of the back rest being adapted to fold between the sections of the seat, the folding sections of the seat being hingedly united, detachable clips adapted to hold the sections of the back rest in extended posiion and the sections of the seat in folded position and spacing means for the sections of the seat.
2. In a folding chair, the combination with a seat and a back rest, said seat and back rest each comprising a plurality of folding sections, said sections of the back rest being adapted to fold between the sections of theseat, said back rest including lateral extensions, detachable clips engaging the lateral extensions to hold the back rest in its extended position, said clips also being adapted to hold the seat sections in folded position, and means for spacing the sections of the seat, as andfor the purposes set forth.
3. In a folding chair, the combination of a seat and a back rest, said seat comprising a plurality of hinged folding sections, said back rest comprising a plurality of folding sections adapted to be folded between the sections of the seat, leg receiving projections depending from the seat sections and adapted to hold the latter in spaced relation, each section of the back rest including a lateral extension, clips detachably secured to the lateral extensions and adapted to hold the sections of the back rest in extended position and the said clips also being adapted to engage the free edge of the seat sections and hold the latter in folded position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
