SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,295, dated March 3, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THADDEUS G. BEACH, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of tables, whereby the legs may be attached and detached at will, allowing shipments of the same to be made in a knockdown condition, and stored as desired in a comparatively small space.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction of parts and their combinations, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a perspective of one of the corners of a table, all the corners being mere duplicates, the leg being shown detached. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the corner with the leg attached and secured in place.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A A represent two rails of a table-frame, to which the top A is secured in any suitable manner, the ends of the said rails being provided with tenons a a,

designed to enter grooves b b in the leg B. These grooves extend from the top end of the leg upon two adjacent sides thereof to a distance nearly equal to the width of the rails, to permit the tenoned ends of said rails to enter the grooves in the leg when the table is set C is a cast-metal brace,provided with flanges c, which enter in and engage with the slots (1 in the rails, to which said brace is secured by screws passing through the angular flanges e of the brace. It will be noticed that this brace has a central slot, D, opening from the bottom thereof and extending upward to nearly midway of the casting, where its upper portion is surrounded by an annular flange, 0, having faces 0 c oppositely inclined, each of the said inclines starting on either side of the slot D to form half of the annulus G. The angle formed by the slotted or grooved sides of the leg is flattened, as at B, on which (Model) is secured a lever, F, bya bolt, E, in such a position that when the leg is in place the center of the lever will coincide with the center of the annulus G on the brace G.

In practice, the brace 0 being inplace and the grooves of the leg coinciding with the tenoned ends of the rails, the leg is slid into place, the brace being between the lever F and the leg B, and the projections f of the lever being between the two parts of the annulus O, by turning the lever its projections f ride the inclines c c and firmly and securely bind the leg in position.

To remove the legs it is simply required to partially rotate the cam-lever, thereby relieving the pressure upon the brace, when the leg can be immediately disengaged.

Instead of the grooves on the inner faces of the rails to relieve the flanges of the brace, other devices of an analogous character may be employed, by means of which the brace is so located as to bring the slot which receives I the bolt in the leg into proper position.

I am aware of Patent No. 206,234, dated July 23, 1878, issued to Henry 0. Hall and Henry J. Durgin, and disclaim any portion of the invention therein shown.

G are the braces cast integral with the corner-brace upon its rear face, so that when in place .they will stand at right angles to the rails, against the inner face of which the free ends of the braces G rest, to prevent the springing of the corner-brace under the strain of the cam F.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. A table provided with side rails and de tachable legs, in combination with the brace 0, attached to said side rails, and having an openended slot, D, and inclined annulus G, and a lever, F, pivotally secured to a leg for removably securing it to the said rails, substantially as described.

2. As a means for removably securing the legs to a table and firmly bracing the side rails thereof, the casting 0, having an open end slot, D, and an annulus, 0, extending on either side of said slot, the parts having oppositely-inolined faces, in combination with a lever, as F, and a bolt for pivotally securing it to a leg, substantially as specified.

3. In a table, the side rails thereof, the casting 0, provided with an open-ended slot, D, and an inclined annulus, 0, attached to and bracing the said side rails, in combination with the leg and the lever F, pivoted to the leg and provided with the projections f, as and for the purposes herein set forth.

4. A table provided with side rails and a removable leg, an angular brace, 0, attached to said rails, and having an inclined annulus, G, in combination with the leg, the adjustable bolt E, screwed into the leg, and the lever F, mounted on said bolt, the parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The rails A A, provided with the tenoned ends a a, leg B, having grooves b b, the brace 0, having the open-ended slot D, annulus 0, extending on either side of said slot, the parts having oppositely-inclined faces, and braces G, the lever F, and bolt E, all combined, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
