Description

D. AUSTIN. Shaft Coupling.
Patented Feb. 11, 1868.

Letters Patenti Vo. 7 4,275, dated February 11, 186 8.

ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, DINSMORE AUSTIN, 'of Underhill, in the countyof Chittenden, and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Couplings 'and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. v I i 1 In the annexed drawings, making a; part of this specification. A represents the axle of any vehicle, or car riage, and B represents the clip,,provided with a'barrel, d, by'which the shafts or p'ole are attached to said vehicle. 0 represents a U-shaped or forked metallicbar or rod, the end of oneof the prongs provided with a collar, c, and the'other -prong'provided with a bevelled shoulder, z, the bar having a finger oi. thumb-piece, b, as a co'nvenient means of operating the said bar 0. v I V One'of the prongs of the bar G is inserted in the barrel (1, and the-other through the holes of the ears of the clip B, and the whole is held in place by means of a spiral spring,f, which works andfits inside of the barrel 'd, and embraces the prong. of thebar C which works therein, one end of said spring resting against the shoulder" a, inside of and near the mouth or outer end of the barrel d, and the other end resting against the collarc of the prongof the bar G. v i Y i It willreadilybe seen that, when it is desired'to attach the shafts or a pole tothe vehicle, it is only necessary to insert the shaft-iron D between the ears of the clip B, and pull the bar C out, by ineans ofthe finger-piece 6,-far enough to admit the shaft-iron ,D, and then the bar, C will be carried back to its position and through the shaft-iron D by means of the springf. It will also beseen that the bevelled shoulder a is constantly pressing against the side of the shaft-iron D, and thereby prevents the rattling of the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The forked bar C, incombination with the spiral spring f and clip B, constructed substantially as and used for the pni'pose specified. r
I In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I havehereunto set. my hand, this 18th day of December, 1867.
Y DIN SMORE AUSTIN.
