Description

ii-a a `TAMES L. MOORE, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 88,060, dated Mwah-23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o! the lam.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES L. MOORE, o'f Bridgeport, in the county of Faireld, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Pencil-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whichwill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the san1e,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved pencil-holder, to be attached to the coat or Vest, for the purpose of receiving and holding an ordinary woodencased pencil, when not in use.
The object of the invention is to obtain a device for the purpose specified, which may be constructed at a very. small cost, and admit of the pencil being readily tted. into and detached from it.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective view of my invention.
A represents the holder, which is constructed of a single piece of wire, bent-ina peculiar form, so as to comprise a pin, to attacliftlie dev-ice to a coat or vest, a. clamp to hold the pencil, and a spring to act upon the clamp.
The holder is constructed as follows:
One vend of the wire is bent to form an eye, a, and the wire then bent to form three sides, b b b", the sides b b being curved, and b forming the connection between b b.
These three sides constitute the clamp.
The side b is prolonged, and is bent to form one or more circles, or convolutions, c, which constitute a spring, and the wire is then extended along, 'as shown at d, parallel with b", and then bent, as shown at e, so as to 'form an obtuse angle with d, then bent quickly around, and extended, as shown at f, toward the angle at t-he junction of d and e, and is then bent transversely around b" and d, and extended downward, to form a pin, g, to pass through the eye a.
' The parts e f bear against the coat or vest, the pin g passing through the same, and the pencil (shown in red) is fitted between the clamp and the parts e f, the pencil being inserted laterally in its place, and, when required for use, drawn ont longitudinally therefrom.
The pin g is drawn out Vfrom and passed through the eye a by springing the parts b b toward and from each other.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-- Patent- A pencil-holder, constructed out of a single piece'oi-` wire, bent in the manner substantially as herein shown and described. i l,
JAMES L. MOORE."
