Description
S. H. HiNE.
Improvement in Spfing Bed Bottoms.
No 123 994. Patented Feb- 27, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcn,
SHELDON H. HINE, OF SEDAN, 1NDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,994, dated February 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHELDON H. HINE, of Sedan, in the county of De Kalb and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Springs for Supporting Bed- Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an arrangement of springs, which may be secured to the inside surface of the siderails of bedsteads, as shown, for supporting bed-bottoms. The ends of the springs nearest the head and foot, respectively, are intended to support cross-bars or frames which carry longitudinal slats or bed-bottoms of any construction adapted to be thus supported.
Letter A of the drawing represents a bedrail, to which the springs a b c are secured. These springs I prefer to make of wood, but they may be made of metal. The middle spring a is fastened by screws or bolts, as shown, to prevent it from moving, except to obtain the spring of its ends. The head and foot springs b and c are secured each by one screw or bolt near its center, upon which it may turn or move up or down. These springs, when attached to bed-rails, are arranged so that the under surface of the middle spring a shall be in line with the upper surface of the head and foot springs 12 and 0, and the inner ends of the latter springs extend a suitable distance under and press up against the former. The weight of the bed-bottom and bedding rests on the outer ends of the head and foot springs b and c at m and y.
By this arrangement of springs, springing motion is obtained from both ends of each of them, and they form a very excellent support for bed-bottoms, and may be used for other purposes.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by patent, is
The spring-bars a, b, and 0, arranged as shown, and pivoted to a bar, A, to operate substantially as set forth.
S. H. HIINE.
