UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicEo STEVART L. MCOURDY, OF DENNISON, OHIO.
COMBINED LOUNGE AND OPERATING-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,053, dated July 26, 1887.
Application tiled June 9, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEWART L. MCCURDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dennison, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Lounges and OperatingTables, and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of'reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in a combination lounge and operatingftable, which is provided with means for adjusting the said operatingtable into various positions for convenience when in use, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimedl Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the device elevated in its highest position as an operating table, and also showing in dotted lilies one end of the table lowered to an inclined position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical central sectional view showing the top lowered halfway, and also showing itin dotted lines moved forward, as hereinafterdescribed. Fig. 3 is alongitndinal vertical sectional view showing the top lowered to form a lounge, and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of one of the adjusting-frames and the detacher-bar. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the adjustable foot or leg support.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A represents the bottom of my improved device, which is mounted on the ordinary legs, A'A, and provided with the upwardly-extending side and end pieces, At A3, the bottom being preferably rectangular in shape. On the bottom A, at each side thereof, are secured the notched strips B, having at each end the series of notches B', or the said notches may be formed directly in the bottom A itself at approximate points. To the strips B, near the Serial No. 204,669. (No model.)
these lower portions, C, when raised bear against stops D, which hold them firmly in their vertical position.
To the inner upper corner or end of the pieces C are hinged the adjusting-arms E E, the two arms of each adjusting-frame being connected by a brace-rod, F, while the lower ends of these arms are reduced to adapt them to engage readily with the notches B', and thus hold the adjusting-frames in their adjusted positions. To the outer upper corner of the pieces C are hinged the upper portions, G, of the adjusting-frames, which are so hinged that they may be adjusted either in a vertical line with the lower pieces, O, as shown, or may be turned outward atright angles thereto. The upper inner corners of these upper pieces, G, are hinged, as shown, to the top H of the combined lounge and operating-table, and this top may be upholstered to suit the taste and requirements of the purchaser.
The manner in which my invention is adjusted is as follows: When it is desired to use it as a lounge, the adjustingframe is Afolded down in the bottom A, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the top H rests upon the side and end pieces of the bottom A, the device then presenting the appearance of an ordinary lounge. When it is desired to use it as an operatingtable, the adj ustingframes may be extended to their full height, as shown in Fig. l, so as to raise the top to its highest point, or the adjusting-frame at either end Vmay be folded down, so as to incline the table at either end, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. Theupper portions of the said frames may be Vfolded down so asl to lower the top to one-half of its full height, and by folding downthe upper portion at one end at right angles to the vertical lower portion, with the adj listing-arms extended and engaging with the notches B', while the arms and lower portion of the frame at the other end are swung down upon thc bottom A, and the upper portion is raised vertically, as shown in Fig. 2, thevtop may be swung farther forward or backward in a horizontal plane, as shown in dotted linesinthe said gure.
Detacher-bars I I, hinged to a central crossbar, A", and formed intwo parts hinged together, are provided for the purpose of withdrawing the frames E from their engagement with the ratchetteeth or notches B'. The 105 outer ends of these bars are free, and are provided with treadles I', on which the foot may be placed. By pressing the treadle downward the detacher is raised, as shown in dotted lines at the left of Fig. It,` and coming in contact with the cross-bar E raises the frame E, as shown.
` The treadle has a slight longitudinal adjustends of the support.
ment, by which it slides inward and permits the detacher to be elevated, asindicated. The detacher could be placed on the top H and connected to the frame E by a link attachment. In this case movement would be the reverse of that shown in the drawings. The detacher would be bent downward when not in use, and would be drawn into a straight line against the under side of the top when the frame was to be detached, as shown by dotted lines in Figs. l and 3. The particular location of the detacher is a matter of choice.
A foot or leg rest is attached to the top H.
. It is held by asupport, K, on one side of which is formed a series of diametric channels, K. The shank K2 of the support is pivoted on the under side of the top, so that the rest may be turned underneath, as shown in Fig. 3. A hole is made through the outer end of the support, and an eyebolt, L, is put therein. The eyebolt holds the shaft M of the swinging leg or foot support M. The eyebolt is loosened or tightened by the tail-nut N. The shaft M may be set at any angle, or raised or lowered so as to adjust the supportM nearer to or farther away from the top H, or to set it higher or lower. It may be turned to a horizontal position, `s'o that the said support may be slipped under the table-top with the support. The shaft M is bifurcatedat its upper end, so as to provide arms in which to journal the A strap,` O, is attached to one arm, and may be buckled into a buckle, O', on the other arm. The strap is lo fasten the leg or foot to the support M.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved'combination lounge and operating-table will be readily understood. It will be seen that the device may be used as an 'ordinary lounge, and that the operating-table may be adj usted readily and conveniently at any desired angle or in any position. The several working parts are simple and strong in construction, and therefore not liable to break or get out of order.l
I am aware that it is not new to construct invalid-bed bottoms in sections, which sections are hinged together and vare adjustably connected with the bedstead or frame independently of each other, whereby the several sections can be adjusted to ahigher or lower level and to any desired inclination at will by single adj listing-frames hinged at their upper ends tothe bed-bottom and having their lower .ends adapted to fit into 'one of a series of bottom can be adjusted by sliding one frahlc over the other or by turning the frames about their hinge-connection with the bed-bottom. No claim is made to such construction, which is essentially different from my device, as hereinafter noted in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent,
is- 1. The combination, with the bottom' and the adjustable top, of means for positively connecting the top and bottom together, consisting ofthe adj usti iig-frames interposed between the top and bottom, composed of the lower portion, C, the upper portion, G, and the adjusting-arms E, hinged together, substantially Y as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the bottom having the side and end pieces .andthe longitudinal strips formed withthe series of notches, arranged as described, the movable top consistingofa single piece, the adjusting-frames com.- posed of the upper and lower portions hinged together and tothe top and bottom, respectively, and the adjusting-arms hinged to the top of the lower portions, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the top, the bottom, and the adjusting-frame, of the hinged bar pivotally supported at one end and resting upon the fulcrum at its opposite end, and
connected with said adjusting-frame vnear the hinge, whereby the vadjustment of the intermediate portion of said bar to and from a given plane moves the adjusting-frame, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with thektop, the bottom comprising the end, andthe intermediate cross bars, of the hinged sections C and G, the adjusting-arms E, the crossbar F, uniting the adjusting-arms, and the hinged detacher-bar pivotally connected atitsinner end with theintermediate cross-bar yat the bottom supported at its outer end, which end is provided at its IOO IIO
`outer end with a treadle, substantially as and port K, having diametric grooves on 'its inner face, the eyebolt, and the adj ustable support M, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the bottom A and` top H, of interposed folding-frames located at whereby the said top may be adj usted vertically, longitudinally, or to an incline, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in- I' presence of two witnesses. Y
STEWART L. MCCURDY.
